I Feel Like Moses Without A Staff
"You have a party to attend to this evening."
Those were the first words my dear mother said to me over breakfast. She didn't even ask me if I am okay or even looked at me. I just nodded as I continued eating the perfect pancakes with honey and butter. There's no use arguing with her about the party. Whether I like to attend or not, my mother will force me anyway to attend parties that cost a lot of money. I never enjoyed these parties and for me, it's a waste of time.
I was about to excuse myself when I heard her spoke again, "How was school?" Finally, she asked something about me but still she didn't even glance at me even for a second.
"It was good. I learned a lot. I met a lot of people from all walks of life," I babbled as I tried to remember the things that happened at school and at the hospital. "I was given a chance to assist and observed Dr. Blaire while he was operating a man with polyps in the gallbladder and the other one was with Dr. Tan when he performed cataract surgery. It was such an honor to see those skilled, famousdoctors in action. Oh, I also volunteered at one of the children orphanage and..."
"That's enough," she cut my story telling of my awesome life as a student. I could tell that she didn't want to hear anything I'm about to say anymore as her lips formed into a thin line. She glanced at her wrist watch and as I watched her do so, I realized how little I know about my mother. She looked up to me and wiped the corners of her mouth with a napkin, "I have an important meeting. Good to hear you're doing well at your studies," she said deadpan. With that, she rose from her seat and walked towards the door.
"Have a wonderful day, mother," I grumbled, feeling hurt and disappointed of how she quickly dismissed her own daughter. My mother couldn't even spare a minute to listen to me! I mean, mothers listen to their kids, right?
Apparently, my mother was not one of those.
Sometimes, I feel my mother hates me. Sure, she provided me with things that I needed, taught me about manners and how to act in front of people, but those things weren't enough. It's just so hard to freaking pleased her.
"Good morning, sweetheart," I snapped from my thoughts when I heard the familiar male voice that I missed so much.
"Dad!" I ran towards him and squeezed him with a tight hug. I missed him so much, it's like forever since the last time I saw him. It's been lonely without him in the house.
"I miss you, kiddo," I let go of him and look at my father. He was still the same man who took me to summer camps when I was young. The only differences were the fine line of white hair on his head and the wrinkles that were on the corners of his sapphire – colored eyes. He smiled at me then ruffled my hair just like what he used to do. We sat at the chairs and at that moment, Martha came in with a cup of freshly brewed coffee. After placing the coffee at the table, she gave me a look and the corner of her mouth curved upward before she walked away with a tray on her hands.
What on earth was that about?
Instead of spending brain cells to figure out what's wrong with Martha, I focus my attention to the man in front of me. I watched as my father added generous amount of sugar and cream on his coffee. He then took two slices of bread and placed two bacon strips and egg that were on his plate to one of the breads. After that, he added ketchup and placed the other slice of bread on top. Finally, he took a big bite on the sandwich he just made. His closed eyes told me that he enjoyed it.
