First day of the school year, giddy giggles and excited stories from different students echoed through the hallway, as a young lady who walks warily tries to avoid a group of people in front of her.
Hmm, this is probably the right place. She stopped and entered the room. Only few people were talking, probably because they are all freshmen and don’t know each other. A few minutes later, a man walked inside the room, striding on its way to the table in front confidently.
“Okay, welcome everyone to my class, English I, Communication Arts and Skills. I am Mr. Sid Isidro. Now-“he was interrupted when a lady walked inside the room clumsily, almost dropping her things. “Sorry sir I’m late.”
“Hold up Miss. What’s your name?” Mr. Isidro asked.
“I’m Mika Aereen Reyes sir.” She stated, stopping dead in her track. She heaved a deep sigh, like trying to composed herself.
“Okay Miss Reyes, I’ll let you go this time because it’s the first day of the class but on our next meeting, don’t try to be late, not even a second. Understand?”
“Yes sir.”
“Okay, you can sit now.”
“Thank you sir.” she spoke, almost in a whisper.
Mika marched on my direction. She took a seat on the vacant chair next to me, turned and said “Hi there.” with a lazy smile lingering on her lips. I didn’t know what to react; she was the most beautiful girl I have ever seen. I am lost in words.
“Next!” Mr. Isidro shouted impatiently.
“Huh?” I asked in confusion.
“You’re next. State your name and other interesting stuff about you.” Mika responded helpfully.
“Oh thanks.” I murmured. “Hi everyone! I am Victonara Galang but you can call me Ara. I play volleyball, and I guess that’s just it.”
“Hmm. Very short. Okay, next.”
“Hello. Again, I’m Mika Aereen Reyes from St. Scholastica’s College. I also play volleyball. I’m 5’11 in height. I’m in love with food and I play volleyball. Oh, did I already say that? Uhm, yeah.” Mika stated, laughing in her own bafflement.
“Oh, so you two are both volleyball players. Now if you really like that game, you should try out for our school. Our team is simply the best.” Mr. Isidro stated proudly.
Is he endorsing? Nice try Mr. Isidro, my thoughts.
“Okay, that’s it for today. You can leave now.” Mr. Isidro said dismissively, waved goodbye and went away.
“So, you’re also a volley player? Are you going to try out this afternoon?” a hint of excitement from Mika’s voice. She was smiling gleefully.
“Already? Wow, that’s way fast. Probably. I mean, volleyball has been my passion ever since I was young.” Ara said while organizing her things.
“We could go together if you want.” Mika offered, looking expectant.
“Sure Mika.” she answered and smiled at her.
