Capítulo Seis: Only Talented Hispanists Can Sing Genie In A Bottle In Spanish

NB: Some references you may not be familiar with:

test (n): A procedure intended to establish the quality, performance, or reliability of something (ie M, J and P's Spanish skills). M, J and P took one the previous lesson.

Scores:

M: 18/20 (93.3%)

J: 19/20 (95%)

P: 17/20 (85%)

Since none of them revised, it must be said that their scores are rather impressive, no?

It's Chico Time (n): First single by The X Factor contestant Chico (full name Yousseph "Chico" Slimani). Chico performed the song on the show on 19 November 2005. It is the only time that a contestant has performed an original song in the live stages of the show. It was released in the UK on 27 February 2006 and entered the UK Singles Chart at #1 on 5 March 2006 toppling Madonna's hit "Sorry" and staying for two weeks at the top of the chart. The chorus is based around the phrase: 'What time is it? It's Chico Time!', which is presumably a rhetorical question, since the singer answers himself.

Genie In A Bottle (n): Second single by American pop recording artist, Christina Aguilera, taken from her self-titled debut album. The song was released to mainstream radio on June 22, 1999 as the album's lead single, and became an overnight success, staying atop the Billboard Hot 100 for five weeks (the longest reign at number-one that year). A mid-tempo teen-pop song with a light, R&B undertone, "Genie in a Bottle" speaks of a female's deep desire to be "set free by love", and how her years of loneliness make her feel similar to a genie locked in a bottle.

hispanist (n): An expert in or student of the language, literature, and civilization of Spanish-speaking countries.

puff (n): A short, explosive burst of breath or wind. J's new substitute for a swear word.

SingStar (n): Karaoke game created for Sony's Playstation. J owns it.

Brownen (n): As we discovered in the previous chapter, this is Señora's first name.

Señora Evans (n): M, J and P's previous teacher. Her surname has been changed for safety reasons. And just in case this is found.

Spanish classroom. Girls are about to recieve their test results. Señora will once again be represented with an S. It makes my (M's) life easier.

J: Señora, I need a new book.

S: Well, I have a stack of them in my office, but I can't go to them now. After the lesson, come with me, and you can go to the locker room via my office, darling. I need to get everyone to make their appointments for Parents' Evening!

While S is handing out test results

J: muttering I don't want to go home 'via your office', Brownen. You paedo.

M: in sing-song voice You know you want to...

J: No. M, this makes me reconsider. She is not the paedo. You are.
