A New Self

Alexia twisted. The candle's flame danced behind her.

She looked back at the portrait—no—mirror. It was a mirror. The enthralling girl studied her with confusion. Alexia stepped toward the glass, trembling as she lifted a hand. The girl on the other side reached toward her at the same instant with shaking fingers.

"I am dreaming." The double's lips moved along with hers.

There could be no mistake.

Somehow, this was her reflection.

She closed her eyes and opened them wide. The young woman remained, Leonardo Da Vinci's own depiction of a dark-haired angel.

Beneath flawless skin hid the child who'd turned sixteen a month ago, the young woman whose father hid her away because of an unsightly exterior. This angel had the same bone structure, nose, and bitten lips, but the gray-green pallor, the dark circles, and the harsh lines of her face had vanished. Alexia's eyes were the same, a vivid green that had accentuated the bruised color of her skin, and now popped against its peachy hue.

"Impossible!" She lifted her trembling hands, slim and shapely. The same as they appeared in the mirror. Running her fingers over the voluptuous curve of her hips, she swallowed. "Not possible!"

Yet she couldn't deny what the mirror told her. She'd been changed. Or lost her mind.
