"Only two more hours!" My mother, excitedly, chirps. I smile in the backseat of our silver Altima. We're on our way back home to Manhattan New York from Miami, Florida. I lean my head back against the seat and put my headphones into my ears. I let myself slowly drift to sleep as the music blasts through my headphones, blocking out the world. The memories of our wonderful vacation fill my head. My father and I snorkeling, my mother and I sitting in front of the ocean planning out our days, my little, ten year old brother building his sand castles in the sand beside me... All of it absorbs in my brain. I open my eyes and look at my little brother who has fallen asleep with his head gently rested against the window. I smile and close my eyes again, going back to paradise. This is our family's third vacation. And, this was probably the best one yet. My brother and I raced in go karts one night, which I let him win. My dad and I would swim out to the sand bar and watch fish swim past our feet. There was lots of laughs, smiles, and heart warming moments. Most teenage girls don't like spending so much time with their family, but I do. My family is everything to me. I don't have many friends at my school. Only my one friend Seirra. We just became friends a few years ago. She's the closest thing I have to a best friend. Anyways, I don't spend a lot of time away from my family. The longest I've gone without seeing them was when I visited my aunt Lisa in Chino Hills, California one summer. But, that was only for a few days. This vacation was the best time of my life.
My eyes shoot open at a screeching sound. I rip my headphones out of my ears.
"What's happening?!" I yell. My brother sits up and opens his sleepy eyes.
"Steve, watch out!!" My mother shrieks. That's when our car flips. I see my mother and father's body come out of their seats and smash against the roof of the car. My brother's small body jolts forward and crushes against the back of the driver's seat. As the car hits the pavement again, my mother's body crashes into the windshield, shattering it. My father's body flies forward, out of the windshield. My little brother's body moves like a rag doll. He's unconscious. I hold myself down in my seat. Luckily, I have my seatbelt on, unlike my family members. When the car flips again, my head hits the window and everything goes black.
I wake up screaming and crying hysterically. My uncle Tim bursts into the room.
"Riley! What's wrong?!" He asks, frantically.
"They were in an accident!!! We have to get them to a hospital!!" I yell through my sobs. My uncle takes a deep breath.
"I thought you were hurt," he sighs and wipes his hand over his face.
"We have to get them to a hospital!" I yell again.
"Sweetie... Your parents and brother died almost a month ago... There's nothing we can do now," he says and almost chokes on his words.
"Riley... you okay?" He asks me. I start crying harder than I think I've ever cried before. My body shakes with sobs. I shake my head. My uncle walks over to me and gives me a warm hug. I can't even manage to wrap my arms around him.
"I know it's hard," he says into my hair. I sniffle.
"Try to go back to sleep. You have to catch your plane to Chino Hills in a few hours," he says to me and rubs my back.
