Chapter 4

The next day was Sunday, which meant unless I had a wedding to go to, I didn’t have to work. It was nice to be able to sleep in. After a really long week, I always looked forward to Sundays. I usually go shopping in the afternoon. In the morning, I sleep in until around ten. This morning though, I woke up rather early. It was only eight thirty. I was wide awake. I decided to text Talia and see what she was doing today.

Me: Heyy girl! What are you doing today? Maybe we can hang?

She immediately replied: I’m actually performing at the NYC Grand Hotel… you want to come watch?

Me: Sure what time should I be there?

Talia: can you be here in an hour and a half?

Me: Is it fancy?

Talia: just wear a dress like you do to work

I sat up and stretched. I was excited to be able to go to Talia’s show. I hadn’t been to one of her shows since she first started performing four years ago. I got up and walked to my bathroom. It took about thirty minutes to get ready. I straightened my hair and put a sparkly headband in it. I wore a pink dress that went down to my mid thigh, with lacy sleeves down to my elbows. I wore hot pink platform heels with it.

As I was walking out of the apartment building to my car in the parking lot, I heard a voice call behind me. “Gabriella!”

I turned around. Will was running toward me waving. I smiled and waved back. When I saw him in his suit, I remembered something. He worked at NYC Grand Hotel.

“Where are you headed? You’re pretty fancy. Do you work today?”  He had way too much energy.

I laughed. “No I don’t work today. I’m going to my friend’s performance. You remember the girl I was telling you about?”

He nodded. Where is it? There’s a Broadway performance at the hotel and I have to supervise.”

“It looks like we’re going to the same place.”

He smiled. “Can I give you a ride?”

“Are you sure?”

“Of course. We can save gas.”

I smiled. “Cool. Lead the way.” The hotel was closer to the apartment than I thought. It only took about ten minutes to get there. We easily kept up conversation in the car. It’s like it came natural to us to talk to each other.  We got to the hotel, and everybody who worked there seemed to know who he was. They respected him, but weren’t afraid of him. Most managers of hotels were feared by their employees. I smiled when I saw all of the people treat him like a friend. He led me to a large auditorium. We both sat down close to the front of the room. The stage was dark but you could hear the soft bustling of the performers behind the curtain. We sat for about ten minutes before the lights went down and the announcer started talking.

The show lasted for an hour and a half. Talia had one of the lead roles which I was happy about. She hadn’t gotten a lead role on Broadway yet, but little roles like this would increase her shot at that.  I didn’t get a chance to talk to Talia after the show, but I texted her to tell her good job.

I realized that Will would probably have to work later than the show went, and that he was my ride home. I got up from my seat and walked out to the lobby. Will was standing by the front door greeting people. I smiled. He was such a down to earth person.  He saw me waiting for him and held up a finger to me to wait for a minute. I looked around the lobby and found a couch. I walked over and sat down on it. I was there for about five minutes before Will walked over to me. “Are you ready to go?”

“You’re already done working?”

“Yeah, I was off today but the person running this thing got sick so I volunteered.” He shrugged like it was no big deal. I smiled. This guy just kept getting better and better. I got up off of the couch.  We walked out of the hotel and to his car. It was about one thirty so we went to lunch.

He convinced me to go to this fancy restaurant across town that was supposed to be the best place in the city. It took forever to get there though.  That’s why he had to convince me to go there. The restraint turned out to be amazing. Expensive, but who cares?

We spent a lot of time just talking at our table. I started to realize this was the second ‘date’ we’d been on. I thought about that for a couple minutes. After I didn’t say anything for five minutes Will asked, “Gabriella, are you okay?”

“What are we?”

He hesitated. “Well, what do you want to be?” Of course he said that. Leave it to a guy to let the girl decide what their relationship status was.

I sighed. “Well, I mean-“ Before I could answer my phone started ringing. “Damn it. I’m sorry I need to see who it is.”

He nodded. “No worries.”

It was my assistant. I ignored it. Whatever it was, it could wait. I smiled. “Anyway. So back to our conversation.” Before I could go on, my phone started ringing again. I sighed. “Okay. She’s obviously not going to leave me alone.”

“Do you need to leave?”

“Hold on. Let me see what she wants.”

“What’s wrong?’

“You have a client at the office bawling her eyes out saying that her wedding's going to be a disaster.”

I closed my eyes and sighed heavily. “What happened?”

“She’s saying the florist ordered her the wrong flowers.”

“Well find her file and take care of it yourself. We’ve been through this before.”

“Her file is missing and the computer won’t turn on.”

“Okay I’ll be right there. I’m across town though so just calm her down until I can get there.”

“You got it boss.” I hung up the phone.

“I’m so sorry to do this to you. Can you dive me to the office?”

“Of course. No problem.”

It took forty five minutes to get to my office. I felt so bad for making him drive me there. The car ride was miserable and awkward. It was extremely quiet and when we got to the office, he put a fake smile on. I could tell he wasn’t happy. He had wanted to have lunch with me and I ruined it. Well my work had ruined it.

Maybe I thought I was living the dream because I only communicated with one person who was as busy as I was. Now that I had more friends, I just wasn’t sure anymore. Maybe this wasn’t my dream. Maybe being a wedding planner wasn’t what fate had in mind for me. If this guy was in my life, I would never see him. So now, I have a choice to make: Will or weddings.
