Chapter 19: Change Is Constant

Lilly's POV

If this were a Disney movie, we'd be living in a kingdom and getting married right now. But this isn't a

Disney movie. I only wish it was. Now, we face questioning at the police station. I have to relive my

nightmare...I sit close to Mitch in the station. Officer Dillow walks out. "Lillian?" I look up, and stand.

Before I go, Mitch squeezes my arm. I want him to come with, but I know he can't. I walk to Dillow, and

join him in the interrogation room. Dim lighting, with two chairs pulled up to opposite ends of a table

greet me. A recorder sits on the table, and Dillow carries a legal pad and pen. I sit, and he sits

across from me.  He clicks a button on the recorder, and begins.

"So, Lillian, tell me, what happened moments before Jerome knocked on your door?"

"I was making coffee, and editing things, and I heard a knock on my door."

"What did Jerome say when you answered?"

"He was definitely drugged, no need for a Breathylyzer test. He said he loved me, and other crazy

stuff...he was so drunk and I like to forget the night but I know I won't..."

"Interesting." he scribbles something on the legal pad.."and what exactly happened after-?"

"I closed the door, and he kept knocking, so I opened it again. I told him to go home, but he pushed

the door. I couldn't fight him, the force was so surprising. One second, I was on my feet. The next,

a gun was pressed against my head. I was on the floor, and Jerome had me. Pretty soon, my

parents showed up too...they hurt me and tied me up. I sat there, waiting. They talked of their plans

and I was motionless. I had nowhere to go."

"I see.." scribbles..."also-" a voice interrupts him, through his small walkie-talkie.

"Dillow *psssh* get a DNA swab of her, we want to see something *pssh*" the voice crackles.

Dillow looks at me, and nods. "We just need to swab your cheek, no big deal. Lab's just running

some small DNA tests and whatnot." he says. I nod. He runs a Q-tip on the inside of my mouth,

and goes to leave the room. "This will only take a second. I just need to hand this off and we'll

continue the questions." I nod, but say, "C-can Mitch come in? And talk while you're gone?" I

ask, hopefully. He shrugs, "Why not?" He waves Mitch in. Mitch tries not to rush in too fast.

He sits, and Dillow closes the door. "How's it going Lil?" he asks, holding both of my hands.

"Good. I can't believe I'm saything this Mitch, but I hope Jerome doesn't face too many-"

Mitch interrupts me, "Lil. He tried. To KILL you. KILL! K-i-l-l!" "Mitch, I uh, I know how to spell you

numb nut!" I say, a tad bit annoyed. He sighs, closing his eyes and breathing. "I know, I know. I just

worry about you, ya know?" he says. "I know. But I'm a big girl." I say, a small smile tugging at

my lips. He squeezes my hands, and I want to reach over and kiss him. Dillow knocks, and we let

go of our hands, not wanting to make Dillow feel awkward. Mitch stands up, and leaves. Dillow

replaces him. "Sorry about that, we may continue now." I nod. "SO, back to where we left off. You

said your parents were also involved? Can you give me some background on them? Were you

very close to them?" he asks. I shiver. My parents...I swallow hard. I feel chills spread down my

spine. "M-my parents..." I say, my voice going up and down in pitch.

~Flashback~

Lilly is six....

"YOU! GET OUT OF HERE!" screams my mother.

"Mommy. Mommy, what are you doing?" Lilly trembles.

Slap. Lilly cowers in fear. Kick. She is on the ground. Boom. The world turns black. She wakes

up, outside. She walks to the front door, and tries to open it. It's locked. Her parents have a note

pinned to the door. Lilly can't read all of the words. The only ones she recognizes is get away. She

sits on the porch, and cries. Her best friend and next door neighbor, Eliza walks out and sees

Lilly.

"Lilly! What's wrong?" Eliza cries.

Lilly sniffles, "My mommy and daddy kicked me out."

"Come live with me, Lilly." Lilly gets up, and they hold hands to Eliza's house.

~Flashback Ends~

"They beat me. Abused me to the breaking point. They kicked me out at age six, and I moved in wth

my neighbor, Eliza. They were the worst parents in the world." I croak. Dillow looks at me, almost

afraid, and I shrug, my shoulders sagging. A knock is heard on the door. Dillow gets up. Whispers

are heard through the crack in the door. He looks at me, and says, "Excuse me." I nod, and the door

closes. After a few minutes, I hear Dillow open the door again. He walks in, his face a pale

expression. He coughs, and blinks fast.

"What's wrong?" I ask, genuinely concerned.

"Lillian...you're not going to believe this..." he whispers, almost barely audible.

"W-w-what? Dillow, are you alright?" I ask.

"The DNA test...Jerome is your brother..."
