"Honey! Are you packed yet?" My mom called to me from the kitchen.
"Uhh..getting there! I can't find my sunglasses!" Living in Ohio, there isn't much use for sunglasses. But, every so often my family goes on a vacation to somewhere where there is a need for them. This years choice was Hermosa Beach in California.
My family being my brother (Aiden), my mom, my dad, and me.
"Hmm...last time I saw them was in the family room. Try looking there!" My mom and I had always had a great relationship. She was like my best friend, well kind of. There were arguments sometimes, but nothing too grand. My dad was away all the time, on business trips. So as you can imagine I don't see him very often. He wasn't even joining us, because he was too busy in South Carolina. Most of the time he barely notices me. It's not just me, it's Aiden too. He's just...busy.
I continued tearing apart my room to find those stupid sunglasses. "Yes!" I whispered in excitement to myself. The excitement was in two parts. One, I found them. And two, they aren't broken after being ignored at the bottom of my junk drawer for a few months. "Hey Ma, I found them!!"
"Okay good. Just make sure you have everything. We don't wanna have to turn around and miss our flight." She yelled back upstairs to me. Not like she would actually turn the car around for sunglasses.
"Alright!" I had already gone through the checklist I made four times. I wrote it out last week an the pen was smeared, while the paper was crinkling pretty quickly. "Uh, Ma? What time do we have to get to the airport by?"
"We have about an hour!" I heard the slightest crack in her voice from all the yelling we'd been doing.
Since my packing list had been completed, officially, I still had one more thing to do. Someone was requesting a call from me before I left from the airport. It was my best friend, Jenna. And because my mom was busy yelling at Aiden to finish packing - now seemed like the perfect time. I shut the door and got out my phone. Dialing her number and listening to that classic cell phone waiting noise.
"Hey, Jenna I'm leaving soon." I said as I heard the phone line crackle when she picked up.
"Wait, Blair, like right now? How soon?" She sounded frazzled over this.
"I'm leaving in an hour, calm yourself!" I fibbed a little, were actually leaving in about 45 minutes now.
She paused, probably to settle her self. "So, what are you guys doing down there? Just chillin?" She was curious because everything I do, she usually does also. Were those friends, separation isn't an option. But, on this one occasion, we were forced to split up.
"I don't know, probably just relax...? School starts right when I get back. Why not make the most out of the end of our summer."
"Your so boring." She argued with me. "Go find some cute guy or something. If you just relax the whole time you won't even remember the trip!" That's Jenna, slightly boy crazy, but that's just her personality. Nothing to fix about it. Plus I knew I was nowhere near getting a boy to notice me. After all my years through elementary, middle, and Highschool...I still can't get a guy. I mean sure, everyone says I'm 'gorgeous,' but the reality is that they say that to pretty much anyone. I'm average. Average height, average face, average everything... What is so amazing about that? My hairs nothing special, blonde. With some more strands of lighter blonde. Maybe my eyes make up for everything. I mean, Jenna did convince me a while back that 'they sparkle like the blue sea itself.' Of course, that's one of the most cliche things to ever come out of her mouth.
So if any guy is interested, too bad because once I start talking- they won't be.
"I think I'll remember the trip any way I spend it." I said plopping my self down onto my bed. My most missed item during every trip.
"Just do something crazy. You won't be going back there."
"Well, we'll have to see what happens now, won't we?" I said a tad annoyed.
"Blair! 15 minutes!" My mom called up the steps, for the last time today.
"Sorry, Jenna I have to go-". Her high pitched voice cut me off.
"Wait, no-" I then cut her off, because if I didn't get down stairs, my mom might not be very pleased with me.
"Wait, yes! Okay! There's cell service in California too, I'll text or call you, or something." I clicked open the handle to my suitcase and began rolling it down the stairs. It made that unpleasant 'thump' noise on every step. "Alright bye Jenna!" I took the phone from my face as she repeated my goodbye and hung up.
Alright. I went over my list one more time. Good. Have it all. Ready to go.
My mom led us out into the garage, piling our suitcases into the trunk of our car.
"Shotgun!" Aiden called then flung into the front passenger seat.
"That means Blair gets the window in the flight." My mom said. This wasn't actually any rule we had. Reasons why I love my mother, exhibit A. She shot a smile at me while I slid myself into the back seat, shutting the door.
My mom started the car, while I got comfy in the backseat. Off to the airport.
