Elsa

Darkness was all she could see. Where she was, she didn't know.

Elsa stood up and slowly breathed in the cold, dusty air. Drops of sweat beaded down her forehead despite the cool atmosphere. The hair along the back of her neck was prickling, her every nerve screaming.

Something was wrong.

She reached for her pocket, and felt something brush against her palm. A flashlight. Elsa sighed in relief and pulled it out, holding it firm. She flicked the switch on, and it flared into light, making her eyes water. Through the blur, she observed her environment. What caught her attention was a slender figure, standing far in front of her.

"Hello, Elsa."

A voice. A woman's voice. Whispery, confident, gentle. She'd heard it before. She knew she'd heard it.

Elsa's hand shook, scattering leaping darts of light as if a host of fireflies had risen out from the darkness below. Her vision suddenly blurred and zoomed in at the figure, like the lens of a camera. Acid boiled in her stomach as she finally realized who the voice belonged to.

"Mother." But she knew that it was impossible. It had to be. Her parents had died in a car crash three years ago.

"Long time no see..." her mother smiled, dimples appearing on her cheek, like it always had.

Elsa's lower lip quivered and she sucked in her breath, "Mom, I missed you..." Her mother smiled sadly and opened her arms wide for a hug, and she ran and buried her head on her mother's chest. After a moment, she cleared her throat.

"Look Elsa, I don't have much time. I never got the chance to say so before... the accident. Please, take good care of your sister. I can't help but notice, well, for these past few years you haven't spent much time with Anna."

"I know, mom. But can't you see that I'm trying?"

"Elsa..." Her mother held her hands and gripped them tight. "Honey, don't always focus on your studies. You're pushing yourself too hard. Make some time for other things too." Elsa jerked her hand back, and sighed. "Mom... I-"

Before she was able to finish her sentence, her vision began to blur and her mother started to fade away from her. "No!" Elsa tried to scream, but her voice seemed to fail her. "Good-bye, dear. 'Till we meet again."

And that was the last thing she heard from her mother.

Elsa woke up, gasping her heart painfully slamming against her ribs. She was in her bed in her house, and morning light filtered through the curtains. Just as she was about to stand up, her alarm clocked rang, a rather loud and unpleasant noise. Elsa groans and hits the snooze button with her fist, and headed groggily to the bathroom.

It was the first day of high school.

Elsa walked into the kitchen and opened the refrigerator door. She held a carton of orange juice, and began pouring it into her glass. She yawned, blinked her eyes hard. Her eyes began to water, but she didn't really care.

"Good morning!" Anna squealed with glee as she opened the kitchen door wide. Elsa nodded her head and smiled, "Good morning." Anna poured a carton of milk into a bowl of cereal. She looks happy today, Elsa thought. "What did you dream of last night?" Elsa says, trying to sound as nonchalant as she can. Remembering the dream about her mother, she hoped that her sister would've dreamt of something maybe similar to hers. Anna blinked, and stared off to space, as if it was hard for her to remember. After a while, she snapped her fingers and grinned. "Oh yeah! It was about you and me building..."
