"Dad's sick?" I asked, more than slightly shocked."Yeah and it's bad Nevada," crackled my older brother Cody's voice over speakerphone.
"How bad exactly?" my twin sister AJ whispered next to me, but all I could do was shrug as we both waited for Cody to carry on.
"Let's put it this way; I'd ask you guys to come home to spend his last few days with him, but I doubt you would get here in time," he said slowly, making AJ's eyes widen.
"Why wait till now to tell us?" I asked through clenched teeth. I knew my sister and I weren't exactly close with our Dad but I would have expected my brother to have at least given us a heads up.
"He didn't want you guys to lose focus," Cody answered carefully. Suddenly AJ grabbed the phone from me.
"He didn't want us to lose focus?!" she exclaimed and I cringed, I knew my sister better than to interfere.
I anticipated this answer somewhat though, seeing as our dad had sent us away years ago to live with family and further our skills - coven to be precise, magical skills to be even more precise - it therefore made sense that even on his deathbed he wanted us to stay here.
"In that case tell him we're focusing now and won't be coming home to say goodbye," she screeched and hung up. I stayed quiet while she stood there staring at the phone.
"AJ..." I started after a while, but she shook her head while tears pooled into her eyes.
"He isolated us from society, sent us to this stupid coven to learn magic, where the only people we interact with are our cousins because even the supernatural world can't know how powerful we are...he never wants us home and can't even so much as send a Christmas card," I continued.
"I refuse to feel sad about his death," she agreed softly.
I nodded as I felt a tear make its way down my own cheek.
As it turns out though we both did feel horrible when his death came a few days later. Apparently even horrible old men are mourned by their daughters when the time comes.
So we decided to go home to Mystic Falls to be with our brother for a while and grieve together.
