The Other Sister
Chapter 5
Annaline and Emily followed her family to the box where they would watch the heat.
"So, what were you two talking about?" Emily asked her. Annaline just shook her head, sighing as her friend watched her expectantly. "Come on, tell me."
"When exactly are you talking about? I've been talking with him all night." Annaline answered her friend. Her friend just shook her head.
"You know exactly when I'm talking about. Come on, just tell me." She pleaded.
"We weren't talking about anything. He was checking his car and you kept texting me." She finally answered.
"Yeah, but things seemed a bit different between you two." Emily said.
Annaline knew what she meant. Things did seem a bit different between them. Of course, it was probably because of her. She was the one who said she may like him. That caused a bit of awkwardness between them.
"Annaline, it wasn't that you two seemed extremely awkward. You two actually seemed... closer in a way." Emily told her. Annaline shook her head.
"I can't see how. It was so awkward whenever he grabbed my hand at first. I'm sure it was pretty obvious." She told her friend. Emily shook her head.
"It wasn't. I can promise you that." Emily told her. "He seems to be really worried about you. Maybe that's why it felt like you two were closer. He made sure to never leave your side one bit. It looked like he was holding onto your hand pretty tightly too."
Thinking back, it had felt like Jase was holding onto her hand as if she would disappear. Her actions today had really worried him. She knew that she would have to try to comfort him after they got back to his house. He didn't need to worry about her. She was just a bit more tired today after the argument with her parents and the crazy slumber party.
Then, they quieted down as the heat race started. That was mainly because it would be pretty hard to hear themselves if they did try to carry on a conversation. So, Annaline focused on watching Jase and cheering him on.
-.-.-.-.-
"You did really well son." Jase's father said after his actual race was over. He had placed second after Eric. That apparently happened a lot; one of them placing second after the other.
"Thanks Dad." Jase said. He smiled brightly at his father, looking tired. "Hey, do you mind if I head on home? I'm pretty tired."
"You go on. Annaline, are you going back with him?" His father asked her, smiling softly. Emily gently elbowed her in the side.
"You should go with him." She whispered to Annaline. Annaline just rolled her eyes at her friend.
"You don't mind me tagging along, do you?" She asked Jase. He shook his head, giving her a soft, happy smile.
"Of course not," He said, walking over to her and putting his arm around her waist this time. Again, his hand wrapped around hers.
"You two go on. You both look pretty tired." His mother said, walking over to hug them both before they left. "We'll see you two when everything is over."
"Nothing funny, you two." His father warned them. Jase laughed at that.
"Nothing funny, I promise." He told his father. His father just smiled and shook his head as they walked away.
