I could hear talking, serious talking. The rustling of paper and the quiet humming of machines.
My head, wow that was one headache. I lifted my arm to soothe my head but was abruptly stopped, held back by a tube that was secured to my hand- what the?!
Slowly I tried to open my eyes, my eye lids were heavy and fought back, they were happy to lie asleep.
Painstakingly light filtered into my before black world. The lights were bright, they stung, but I continued, I needed to know what was going on.
I was surrounded by figures. Two large men stood at the end of my bed talking, one wore a white coat and green top while the other wore a grey fitted shirt.
Around them a blue curtain encased the room, a white ceiling looked down on me while I could hear the tapping of busy feet rushing in the distance.
A hospital? How did I end up here?
"Scott! She's awake" A male voice suddenly spoke from beside me, I turned my head to look but again was shocked to feel a plastic mask resting on my nose, oxygen mask?!
"Wha...?" I grumbled aggravated by my position.
"Shh..." Comforted the guy who sat at my side. Gently he placed his hand on my shoulder, I flinched.
Grey shirt pushed past him and leant down by my side, resting his arms on the railings of the hospital bed.
"Decided to join us with your presence?" he peered down at me as the doctor walked up close to his side.
"Lara, how do you feel?" Was the doctor asking me?
I tried to speak but was rapidly hushed by grey shirt, uh um Scott.
"She's too weak to talk doctor, come back later when she's feeling better.... We will see to her in the meanwhile..."
Reluctantly the doctor accepted and shuffled away behind the curtain.
"Idiot" cursed Scott under his breath, looking over his shoulder he then bent down beside me and leant closer "if you breathe a word to anyone, I will personally see to it that you will never see the light of day again, got it?!" He hissed under his breath.
Whoa! What was he talking about? He looked familiar, I knew his face.... I knew he was not a friend...
"She's only just woken up, give her a chance..." Spoke the guy who still sat beside me. I twisted my head to look up at him, he looked little older than me, 25 maybe? As for Scott, 28, 29... I couldn't tell.
Like Scott this strangers face was familiar... He had calm eyes and a narrow jaw, his black hair was short and slightly tousled.
My memory was slowly returning, I feared I knew these men more than I would have liked.
I touched the white sheets that lay over me, feeling nervous I bunched the soft fabric in my fists. I didn't like it here.
Startling me the doctor suddenly reappeared through the curtain; "ah! Mr Finch, I just need you to sign these consent forms on behalf of your wife, you'll be pleased to know I have been informed that the tests came back perfect, mother and baby are fine, you're lucky after a tumble down a flight of stairs like that. You should be taking it easy mrs Finch" he thrusted some papers towards Scott as he looked down at me and smiled.
Husband?!
Me?!
Baby?!
Fuck!
That was it, the memories came flooding back. The fatal day I walked back from the solicitors alone, my fathers death, the house.... Jake. That was his name, Jake was the guy who sat next to me.
It all made sense now. Then it suddenly dawned on me...Escape plan number two had obviously not worked...
