The team had been noticing some things about Hinata. They weren't good things either. The first to notice this change was Suga.
... (flashback)
"Guys!" Takeda yelled as he barged through the gym doors.
"What is it Takeda-sensei?" Suga questioned."I got us another training camp with Nekoma!" Hey exclaimed with a thumbs up.
"EH?! REALLY?!" The entire team quickly gathered around Takeda excitedly. All except Hinata, who stared boredly at the wall.
"This means we'll have to practice extra hard!" Daichi exclaimed, a determined smile on his face. "Alright everyone, let's run some laps!" Everyone obeyed except Hinata, who stayed put.
"Hinata? Didn't you hear Daichi? We have to run some laps." Sugawara questioned.
"Why?" Hinata replied, a bored expression still painted across his face.
"Because, we have a practice match against Nekoma!" Suga exclaimed with a big smile.
"So what?" Hinata retorted. Suga's eyes widened slightly.
"You should be more enthusiastic Hinata! You get to see Kenma again!" Suga exclaimed, his smile never faltering. Hinata simply shrugged and walked away.
...
The next sign was found by Noya.
...
The team was changing in the club room after a long day of classes and practice. Noya and Tanaka were playfully pushing each other around and being their normal, wild selves. Tanaka shoved Noya a bit too hard and he fell on the floor with a dull THUD, bringing Hinata's bag down with him. The bags contents scattered across the floor. Noya noticed a small bottle of pills next to his left hand and picked it up. The entire room froze.
"Shou-chan... why do you have drugs?" Noya questioned, his eyebrows raising. Hinata quickly snatched the bottle away, tucking it into his pocket.
"Hinata... if you're doing drugs then-" Daichi began, only to be cut off.
"They aren't mine, I swear!" Hinata explained, while picking up all his belongings and stuffing them into his bag haphazardly, his eyes wide and hands shaking. "I have to go now, see you tomorrow!" Hey yelled before sprinting out the door.
...
One day it became so bad, Noya almost got hurt.
...
The ball was flying too fast. There was no way Hinata woukd be able to reach it in time. He didn't even bother trying to dive for I, even though he was the closest to it. He just watched as it hit the floor with a blank expression. Kageyama opened his mouth to yell at Hinata for not even trying, especially while they were in a practice match against the powerhouse Nekoma, when Noya stopped him.
"It's alright, Shou-chan! Don't mind! You'll get it next time!"
The gym was eerily silent as they awaited Hinata's response. Hinata's bangs covered his eyes and his fists clenched at his sides. Suddenly, Hinata lost it. Something inside him snapped.
"NO! IT'S NOT ALRIGHT! I CAN TRY AS HARD AS I CAN BUT I'LL STILL NEVER BE GOOD ENOUGH! I'M NOTHING NOYA, SO JUST STOP LYING TO ME AND TELLING ME I'M WORTH SOMETHING, WHEN I KNOW I'LL NEVER BE WORTH ANYTHING!" He shouted. When he lifted his head, everyone in the gym forgot how to breathe. Hinata's pupils were dilated, his face set into a scowl. Never before had anyone seen this expression on Karasuno's resident ball-of-sunshine.
Hinata brought his fist backwards, but before he could throw a punch, he felt an arm holding him back. Hinata's eyes widened, pupils returning to their normal size, as he looked behind him. Daichi stood there, worry and anger etched onto his face in the form of a glare. Hinata broke away from Daichi's grasp and quickly ran out the door.
...
And that brings them to this moment.
"What's wrong with the shrimp?" Kuroo questioned, extremely confused and a tad bit worried.
"We're not sure either." Sugawara sighed worried.
"I'll go talk to him." Kageyama volunteered, power walking out the door. As soon as Kageyama entered the hallway, he heard sniffling coming from the nearby bathroom. Kageyama's heart shattered into a million pieces at the sight of Hinata sobbing into his knees on the floor. He slowly slid down the wall next to Hinata, wrapping a comforting arm around him. They sat in silence until Hinata finally stopped crying. Before Kageyama had the chance to ask if Hinata was alright, he quickly stood up, wiping his tears away. Hinata turned to look at Kageyama, his eyes still red and puffy.
"Thanks." Hinata sniffled.
"No problem." Kageyama replied, standing up. "Ready to go back to the gym and maybe talk about what's got you so down?"
"Yeah..." Hinata said, a bitter smile on his face. Kageyama gently wrapped his fingers around Hinata's hand and pulled him out of the bathroom and into the gym.
All eyes shot towards the duo as they walked into the gym.
"Hinata, are you alright?" Kenma questioned. Hinata could see the worry in his otherwise blank expression.
"I need to tell you guys something." Hinata said, that bitter smile never leaving his face.
"What is it Hinata?" Asahi asked smiling slightly, worry evident in his eyes.
"I've lost all interest in volleyball, so..."
"No..." Kageyama whispered, knowing what was coming next.
"I quit."
