Chapter Thirty One
Gold District - The Palace

Kayla woke up to loud banging on her door.  Before bed she had turned the chimes off, locked the door and placed wards so that she wouldn't be disturbed.  Gliding to the door in a pink chiffon nightgown she waved her hand and stared into the outraged face of Lucas.

"You barred me from your room," he stalked past her angrily.

Turning toward her bathroom she looked at her puffy eyes and felt her heart break. Shaking her head she raised her chin.  I am Makayla Aubree Ward and I refuse to let this break me, she thought to herself.  Removing her sleepwear she entered the shower still listening to Lucas rage on in the other room.

"Kayla! This goes beyond what is acceptable.  You are never to lock me out of your room!"  Lucas turned around to see that Kayla wasn't behind him. "What the hell?"

When he heard the shower come on he stomped to the bathroom and paused to watch her silhouette as her hands glided all over her body.  He stood in silence until he heard the water turn off.  He swung the door open and stared at her lush body.

Kayla stood in muted fury as she tried to soften her cold gaze toward Lucas.  In a tepid voice she spoke, "You honor me with your presence, your highness."  Bowing her head looking at the floor trying to suppress the waves of anger that radiated from her body.

Lucas gently raised her head and was surprised by what he saw. Her eyes lacked all emotion as she gazed at him.  "Kayla don't speak to me like that," he said as he wished the sparkle that he loved would come back.

With an abbreviated smile, her lips curled up, "Whatever you wish, Lord Lucas."

Sighing he raked his hand through his hair. "You have no right to be angry-" he began.

Her face remained aloof only her clench fist showing her anger.  "Lord Lucas.  Why would I ever be angry with you?  Wouldn't that mean I had to believe you cared about me?  Wouldn't I have had to care about you to be angry?"  Her brown eyes stared at the space behind him.

Lucas searched Kayla's face for any clue as to what she was thinking but she remained closed off to him and when he tried to search her mind it was shut to him.  He pushed into her mind, "You will forgive me and everything will go back to how it was."

Kayla shook her head and forced warmth into her features, "Lucas!  You've come to visit me," she enthused.

Lucas expression brightened; he reached out to cup her breast before his fingers started to massage her nįpples.

"Let's make love in the shower," he whispered into her ear gently kneading her breast.

Kayla leaned into him, "That sounds like a wonderful idea.  But," she leaned back to look him in the eye, "I'm not feeling too well."  Her smile grew and she placed her hand on his chest, "Do you want to lay down instead."

Lucas frowned as he remembered last night she had left the event earlier with a slight fever.  Picking her up he carried her to the bed, sitting down he gently laid her down, placing kisses over her face and neck.  "I'll get a servant to bring something for us to eat.  We will spend the rest of the day in your rooms while you relax and get better."

Kayla stifled a sigh and mustered a small smile, "Thank you.  I'd enjoy spending the day with you."

Lucas rose from the bed to go find a servant and Kayla watched as he left the room.

Kayla rose from the bed after the door closed and put on clothes so that she didn't spend the day naked with Lucas. She heard the initial push and felt it pull at her but she was able to shake the allure of it off. She was proud that she could smile at him without throwing up. Oh how she wanted to slap the smug smile off his face but held fast to the act she was presenting.  When he reached out to touch her it had taken  all her willpower not to push him away or slap him. She had even held back a scalding retort about him spending the day with the banshee of a wife he'd married.
