"Hey Ara! Do you know where the gymnasium is?" Mika asked, scratching her head. It was already 3pm and our classes just ended and right now, we're looking for the coach of the Lady Spikers, the official name of the school's volleyball women team, Mr. Ramil de Jesus.
"What? I thought you know where it is. I mean you were so eager this morning you couldn't stop talking about it, and let me remind you that because of you, we got scolded in our Math class because the teacher thought we were talking when it's just you blabbering about your excitement and all to- Hey!" I stopped on my words when I turned to face Mika and found out that she wasn't there anymore and now is talking to a guy student. I immediately walked on her side and listened to the conversation.
"Hey hi. Can you help us? You see we're lost because we're just freshmen. Do you know where the school’s gym is?" Mika asked the guy, who was obviously checking her out.
Guys. I sighed.
"Oh sure. I can take you two gorgeous ladies there." The guy said, almost in an obnoxious manner.
"Is that the smoothest that you can do?" I asked sarcastically. Mika elbowed her side.
"Hey, he's just being nice." she mummbled.
Yeah right, I thought, unable to stop myself from rolling my eyes.
"Oh sure. By the way, I'm Mika and this is Ara" she introduced and offered her hand.
"The name's Jeron. Jeron Teng." and took Mika's hand. And instead of shaking it, he kissed the top of her hand. I just raised my eyebrow and shook my head.
"Let's go." I stated and walked first from the group before any of the two can say anything. I caught a look of surprise from Mika's face and a faint smile that followed it.
"Hey, you're going on the opposite direction! The way's here." Jeron shouted.
A little embarassed, I followed them quietly. The two are now chatting to each other animatedly, sharing laughs and giggles. It's like they already entered a new world and made sure that I can't join it. It was cool for me, since I’m used to being alone. The only reason that I’m tagging along with Mika is because we share the same passion, and that Mika was the only one who approached and talked to me that day.
"We're here." Jeron announced. In front of us was a group of young women doing some sort of a rigorous training.
"Wow, what a sight." I whispered in astonishment.
"Bye Mika! Bye Ara! See you around." Jeron said, waved a good bye to us then walked away.
Mika jumped on my side, making me shout some obscene words. I was shocked and a little annoyed of Mika now. But that little commotion brought the lady in front of us to look at our direction.
"Hey coach, looks like the two people you're talking about are already here." a certain lady with gold hairclips uttered. The so-called coach glanced at us, then without any words, advanced to us.
"You must be Mika Reyes, and you, Ara Galang." he said intently, looking first at Mika, then at me.
I cleared my throat and answered for the both of us. "Yes sir." sounding little.
"Okay, welcome to the team you two." Mr. de Jesus declared.
"What?" we said in unison, bewilderment in our faces.
"Sir, you’ve probably misunderstood. I mean, we're just going to try out today so it's quite impossible for us to be part of the team." Mika expressed. Mr. de Jesus nodded then stared at a specific girl in the group deadly.
"You didn't tell them?!" he almost shouted.
"I'm sorry coach. First day of the school was overwhelming so I forgot." the girl apologized.
"Very well. Anyway girls, these are Mika Reyes and Ara Galang, the two new rookies of the team. Please be good to them. And Aby, please explain to them what's happening." Mr. de Jesus said and left.
The so-called Aby, who first noticed us, smiled at us and waved. "Hi. I'm Aby Maraño. This girl here, Kim Fajardo forgot to tell you both that you're already part of the team because our coach was very adamant to have you. And you probably don't know because he doesn't want to freak you out. You'll probably think he's a creep because he personally observed you two when you're still in high school. He already contacted your parents about this and they gladly accepted the offer. And we've also found out that you two are not just good in volleyball but are also passionate to it. So welcome to the Lady Spikers squad." she spoke.
"Hi, I'm Kim Fajardo." another girl who talked to us, who was scolded by the coach earlier. "Sorry I forgot to mention it to you."
"And I'm Cyd Demecillo."
"Hello there, I'm Desiree Cheng."
"Hi. We're the super twins! Cienne and Camille Cruz."
"And I'm Mika Esperanza."
"I'm Carol Cerveza."
"The name's Dawn Macandili."
"I'm Desiree Cheng."
"'sup? I'm Mae Layug."
"Alexandra Tan here."
"I'm Rochelle Sison."
"Last but not the least, Mary Joy Baron"
It almost seems like an endless introduction. The names were now tangled on my mind and I couldn't get through it. I faced Mika who seems a little confused but is enjoying the whole scene.
"I'm living the dream!" Mika cheered out of the blue. The positive vibes were obvious around her. The whole team laughed at her.
"You're so cute Mika! I already like you." someone from the corner exclaimed. I couldn’t remember her name but it was one of the twins.
"Since birth." Mika hollered proudly.
The Lady Spikers laughed again, this time louder, and I can't help myself but laugh along with them too.
