remembering you

I put on my sweatshirt and plugged in my earphones. Hindi na kalamigan but I suddenly felt cold. Lumabas ako ng bahay para mag-hunting ng gatas; wala e, nasanay na ako na uminom ng gatas every night. Kaso pag-check ko sa bote nito, ubos na pala.

I hummed along with the song playing in my phone. Dahil gabi na at wala naman nang masyadong tao sa kalsada, kinarir ko na ang pagkanta. I felt good while walking in the streets, kaya kahit na sa anim na tindahan na pinuntahan ko ay walang tinitinda no'ng gatas na hinahanap ko, good mood pa rin ako. Napatawa na lang ako as I walked back home.

But then, I decided to take another route. Lumiko ako papunta sa isang 'di-kalayuang park. Because I lived alone in my apartment, I had no one to go home to. Kaya pinili ko na maglakad-lakad na lang muna.

I was so engrossed with the lights and sparkling displays in the park as I sat on the grass. Malapit nang mag-Valentine's Day, and it's been a tradition in our place na magkaro'n ng displays sa park for couples and families to see.

I looked at one of the displays that caught my attention. Two candy canes were formed into a heart. Napangiti ako as I looked up in the clear night sky. And suddenly, I remembered someone.

I remembered you.

It was not too long ago when I met you. I was invited to attend an event by some friends. Dahil hindi naman ako busy that time, I agreed and attended. I was talking to a friend when I met your gaze. Your eyes were deep; they almost expressed everything that's in your heart. You continued to stare at me. Hindi naman ako naging uncomfortable, but somehow, I felt a bit self-conscious.

It was an overnight event kaya naman mahaba-habang oras ang sinubukang patayin ng lahat ng nag-attend ng event na 'yun. Kani-kaniyang paraan kung paano susulitin ang oras.

Lumapit ako sa buffet table para kumuha ng maiinom when I felt your presence beside me. I flinched a bit when I turned around and you were there, standing at my side, smiling.

I smiled back at you, trying not to be so obvious that my heart skipped a beat.

You held out your hand. "Hi, I'm Sky," you introduced yourself. "You are?"

I was stunned ngunit agad ko ring inabot 'yung kamay mo, "Carrie," I said.

"Beautiful name," sabi mo and you flashed another smile, a bigger one.

The rest of the night, you sat beside me and talked to me about everything under the sun. It was amazing, though, that you managed to earn my trust that easy. And all night long, I would catch you stealing glances at me. Mapapangiti na lang ako.

Natapos 'yung event and we had to go home. Nag-offer ka na ihatid ako sa apartment ko, at sabi ko okay lang kahit 'wag na, but you insisted.

We were in deep silence hanggang makarating tayo sa apartment ko. It was already dawn, at alam ko na inaantok ka na rin.

"Well, this is me," sabi ko sa'yo bilang pagpapaalam.
