The sirens are blazing in my ears but all I can think about are those last strained words that he had said to me before they pulled me away.
Now I sit in a room with no windows, staring at the floor, trying to comprehend what has all happened tonight. But before I can even figure out all the details I hear the click of a door and then the clacking of high heeled shoes on the tiled floor as a woman with long wavy brown hair makes her way over to me. I turn my head to look back to the door, assuming that there would be someone else as well, but it was just her.
I gazed up at the woman as she sat down in front of me and set folders down on the desk separating us before turning her attention to me. "Hello, I'm Teresa Tess, and your Jane Miles. correct?" The woman asked me my name after she introduces herself. Which I just nodded, not having anything to say at this moment in time. As the seconds ticked by the woman just wrote down notes before looking up at me again, "Honey, I'm going to need you to tell me everything that happened tonight" She says to me gently as if I could start crying at any moment but I had already cried enough to last a life time on the way here. and I know I must look terrible since I almost got shot tonight, and will be forever traumatized by tonight's terrible events but I knew that I would have to explain every detail of tonight to this woman even if it hurts me. I nod to the woman as I take a deep painful breath and then start from the beginning.
FOUR HOURS BEFORE
I wait quietly in the living room of my house at eleven pm. I know I'm nervous, but I shouldn't be, my alcoholic mother is fast asleep right now, I had just checked five minutes ago.
When I hear the very light knock from the front door just in front of me I jump up and run to the door. Only opening it to slide out and then gently closing the door behind me as I then looked up to Kyle, standing in front of me with a wide grin on his face that makes me laugh as I run to his car and get inside quickly and watched as Kyle got in.The car was already running since he had just pulled in and we weren't planning on staying, that's for sure. He pulled out of the driveway slowly and you could hear the crunching on gravel before he turned onto the road.
I watched as the houses that I had seen every day of my life fade into the distance. But I was ready. Ready to leave it all behind, to start new and fresh. With Kyle. I know I shouldn't have left my mother without saying anything. But I pushed the guilt away and turned to Kyle, my future. "So, how long are we going to be on the road?" I ask him, yawning slightly as I pull my knees up to my chest.
I look over at Kyle, and hear him laugh lightly and then he glanced at me "Four days like I said yesterday love" he says to me. Shaking his head as he turned back to face the road again but slowly grabbed my left hand with his right and intertwined are fingers gently and I sighed. I smiled slightly as I closed my eyes, and tilting my head back to rest against the back of the leather seat of his car which I had grown to love almost as much as him.
After three hours of driving Kyle pulls into a bar. The bar his uncle owns. Even though I'm only fourteen and Kyle's only seventeen his uncle still lets us slide. Since he likes the title of best uncle from Kyle and his siblings, and me as well sometimes.
Kyle gets out of the car first and then opens the door for me like he always and then we go inside through the front since all the workers know us. Inside Kyle sits down at our usual small two seat table and I sit down across from him and we start to engage in a wonderful conversation about our future. Which Kyle has full of us being together on the other side of the country and then us getting married after he graduates and then us having two little kids, one boy and one girl. Nathan and Chloe. We pretty much had our whole life planed together but then the worst thing possible happened.
The sound of gun shots stung in my ears and I turned to see a man. He hadn't shot anyone, he just shot the window, and he was trying to get money. I turned to face Kyle but he had gotten up and was walking over to confront the man because it was his uncle's bar of Couse, and this was where Kyle and I first met and shared our first kiss. But I couldn't just let Kyle run up there. The man had a gun.
Kyle yelled at the man, words that I couldn't hear from how loud my heart was pounding in my chest because I was scared to death.
I ran up to Kyle, grabbing his arm and trying to pull him back but then the sound of a gunshot made time stop for me.
The gun was pointed at me; I was surely a goner but just before the shot. Just as he put his finger on the trigger Kyle moved in front of me. Pushing me out of the way, and putting himself in the path of the bullet and he fell to the ground.
I was by his side in seconds, screaming. I felt completely numb. I couldn't feel one bone in my body. I was frantic. Frantic to make sure that Kyle was alive. Tears were pouring down my face as I looked down at him.
Then I felt two hands tighten around both my arms as a set of men tried to pull me away, I tried to stay down next to Kyle. "It's okay, Go with them, Don't worry about me" Kyle whispered from where he was laying, still alive on the ground. But barely, he needed help. Help fast or he wouldn't live. I tried to scream for help but before I could I saw more men gather around Kyle as I got pulled outside where I realized that this was really happening. I could hear the sirens then. I've never heard anything that loud in my life.
PRESENT
"That's it" I whisper, after I had just poured out our story to this woman sitting in front of me. I wanted to scream, I wanted to know if Kyle was still alive. But I could tell by the look on her face that she didn't know either. So I sat there, waiting. Waiting to see if the love of my life had died.
