This morning was no different from the last it was 6 A.M I walked into the bathroom turning on the shower before sitting to pee. After washing off last nights gunk, I jumped out grabbing the towels I had sat on the sink wrapping one around my head and the other around my body. I stood there in the mirror looking down at myself as I grabbed my makeup bag so I could attempt to look decent this morning after the long and horrendous 16 hour shift I had just finished 8 hrs ago. After finishing my makeup and throwing on my favorite and most comfy scrubs, I returned to the bathroom to throw my hair into a sloppy bun before waking Matthew up for breakfast.
I walked down the hall to Matthews's room to get him ready for the day, but when I walked into his room he wasn't in his bed. I looked over the railing to downstairs to see him sitting in front of the TV watching bugs bunny with a huge bowl of lucky charms in his lap. I walked downstairs and into the kitchen grabbed me a bowl filling it up with some oatmeal and figured I would have some breakfast also before getting this day started. We finished our breakfast and ran up the stairs into his room he walked to the bathroom brushing his teeth waiting for me to pick his clothes out and get him ready.
We drove down the street to the baby sitters house we pulled into the driveway I opened the back door of my car unbuckling him from his booster seat grabbing his backpack and walked to the door.
"Bye baby, I'll will see you this evening" I told him giving him a hug and a peck on the cheek.
"Love you mommy" he yelled
"I love you too Matthew" I said walking back to my car
I backed out of the driveway and turned down oak street, I love driving down this street and admiring all of the homes hoping maybe one day I can give Matt something this nice. I jumped onto the interstate cranking up the music driving a little faster than normal this morning since I'm a little bit behind on time today. As I'm driving sipping my coffee, singing along with the radio I see the traffic up ahead is stopped I figured they must have been a wreck up ahead as I got closer to the car in front of me, I merged off onto the exit beside me I would just have to go through town a little ways but hopefully I'll get to work on time.
Finally after almost running two red lights downtown I pulled into the parking garage at Grady Memorial Hospital. I hurried inside and upstairs to the intensive care unit praying I was there before my boss had noticed, thankfully I had. I sat my bags down at my seat beside my best friend Megan who was chatting me up about some shit that had went down in the ER yesterday. I strolled down the hall to begin my med pass to my patients I got halfway down the hall and was in the room with a comatose man named Rick Grimes who was a sheriff in Kings County and was shot during the high speed chase I had seen on the news the night before. As I was leaving the room a man walked in I think it might had been his partner as I could see he had brought flowers and was wearing a police uniform and I could hear him talking to him as I was still out in the hall next the room.
I walked back to the desk to get me some more coffee before finishing my work when the same man walked up to us and began asking questions regarding how his partner was doing, before walking to the elevator.
"Damn He's Fine" Megan said as she checked the officer out as he was leaving.
As I made my way back to my cart laughing and ignoring what Megan had just said I heard the most awful noise I could ever imagine hearing in this hospital. It was the Code Blue Announcement and since I made the wonderful decision 2 years ago to join the code team I had to respond.
Megan and I ran down to the ER were it was being called we rushed into bay 3 to see 4 police officers and multiple nursing staff gathered around the hospital gurney. It was a young woman probably 19-20 years old she had been in a bad car crash on the interstate this morning and had went into cardiac arrest. We performed CPR & tried to shock her heart back into rhythm for nearly half an hour before calling the time of death. We headed out of the room to the ER's nursing station to fill out the appropriate paperwork when we heard blood curdling screams coming from the same bay we just came from. We rushed in not knowing what to expect and we see that the girl had sat up and had bit 2 of the nursing staff who was being to clean her up before the funeral home came to get her.
