Chapter 13

I'd never been kissed before. Not even once.
This was definitely not what I'd expected...
My entire body seemed to be tingling, and when Casey tilted his head slightly and deepened the kiss, a strange feeling began low in my stomach.
My hands automatically found their way around his neck and I was actively responding to his kiss, something I would never have believed myself able to do before.
I realized all of a sudden that the only person I wanted kissing me was Casey. No one else, not even Jeremy Burton could bring me such feelings.
Casey finally pulled back, both of us breathing hard. His eyes never left my mouth, and my cheeks finally started to redden as his gaze moved up to my eyes.
I wanted to hide somewhere, but he was only a few inches away from me.
"How'd that feel?" he asked suddenly, his voice rough.
I swallowed hard and moistened my lips, finding the strength to say something. It didn't work, I was still speechless.
He removed the tray which now had cold food on it and put it on the table beside the bed. I watched him as he slowly got off of the bed and took a step away from me.
"I think I'm going to go get ready for work now." He said, awkwardly turning around.
I wanted to stop him, to tell him his kiss had sent fireworks off, but I was still sitting there like a stupid idiot, unable to say a word.
He waited just another second, then walked away. At the door, he turned to look at me again.
"I'm sorry, Emelyne. I'm supposed to reassure you and keep my distance, not pounce the second I get. I apologize for my actions." He didn't stay long enough for me to even shake my head.
When he left the room, I was suddenly cold. It was as if he brought warmth into the room with him.
I realized I never wanted to wake up without him being there when I open my eyes.

I was such an idiot!
How the hell could I do that to her? I practically attacked her the second her guard was down. This was no way to earn her trust.
Just when things seemed to be getting better I had ruined it by kissing her!
As I changed into my work clothes I thought of a way to prove myself to Emelyne. I decided to keep my distance for good this time. She needed to know she was safe, that she could trust me. And there was no way that was going to happen if I continued to surprise her with kisses.
Even though it had been one hell of a kiss.
Just thinking back to earlier in the morning, the feeling of her lips against mine. I could've given anything to kiss her once more. But it had been a mistake, one that could've caused serious consequences. I didn't want our arrangement to be called off.
That was one of the biggest fears at the moment. Emelyne could change her mind any second and decide she didn't want to marry me after all. In which case I would have to hand over everything to that asshole who ran the council.
