She believed they had a chance. She believed it when he had brushed his finger lightly on her hair and stared at her like a man staring at the last drink of water in the desert. Coveting. Reverent.
She stopped believing it when he locked her away.
Just like the others had done before.
•●•●•●•●•
And then he was staring into her eyes. She was shouting and crying tears she could barely feel rolling down her cheeks.
Don't do this, she thought as she pounded on her glass cage.
She felt her heart breaking or maybe it was her mind, tearing apart, howling and -
Then he was smirking in that roguish way she had so admired and flinging her away.
Flinging away all her hopes. Dreams she had shared with only him.
And she was sinking. Deeper and deeper, with her heart thumping furiously as she thought, did you even care?
She was sinking and she couldn't do anything.
Sinking.
•●•●•●•●•Afterwards, when she had flung him away like he had with her, she felt the all too familiar sting of regret.
She wanted to bring him back and curl up next to him, like the times she had been thinking about past regrets and had thrown all the good china at his head.
She wanted the dark red colour of her blush staining her cheeks whenever he spouted praises of her intellect or had grinned at her with boyish delight.
And she wanted to believe again, that he was warmth and redemption rolled into one.
Instead when he snarled at her with fury, she smiled with an aching bitterness as she shouted "Goodbye James!"
•●•●•●•●•And she had laughed that night, after the façade of happines had fallen off, in the confines of her room. Laughed and cried until her eyes no longer burned and her lungs sputtered out a final tired wheeze.
How stupid she was to even believe they had a chance.
How moronically stupid.
