I didn't want to be part of this mess. I never chose to be chased by bloodthirsty killers or their wolves. Most people would love to get thrown into an adventure of a lifetime. But killers? I don't think so. I run through the woods at a fast pace, my lungs gripping at the oxygen that is slowly draining from my lungs. I can already hear the wolves' crazy cries following me. Any minute now, they will catch up to me. I know it's my time, I can feel it. I feel the wolves snapping at my heels, I fall to the hard forest ground and everything turns black.

"Lexi!" someone yells in my ear.

...

"Hayden, please let me sleep!" I yell while pushing him out of my face.

"Come on Lexi, it's your special day." he says while trying to pull me out of my comfortable bed.

"Fine, just please let me get dressed first."

He gives me a victorious grin and skips out of my room. That's my brother Hayden, he is my favorite person in the world, but sometimes he can be a complete jerk. Doesn't he understand that girls need their beauty sleep. I step out into the hallway and shuffle downstairs. Today, is my 18th birthday and apparently everyone thinks it's such an important day. Let me explain. On everyone's 18th birthday they get picked by their spirit animal. You then train for two years and then join the war against the other side . Most people are very excited to join the war because of its mysteries. But for me, it just seems scary.

"Happy Birthday to you! Happy Birthday to you! Happy Birthday dear Lexi! Happy Birthday to you!"my family starts to sing. You could say that my family is crazy, but we always have a tendency to stick together. Ever since my mom started her singing career, she never really has been home. But she tries to come home to special occasions like my birthday. My mom hugs me and wishes me a happy birthday and my dad winks at me and I roll my eyes at him.

"Time for presents!" Hayden says excitedly.

My dad reaches behind the couch and brings forth a big box of presents. Beside me Hayden jumps up and down with excitement. My dad takes out a small box and hands it to me. I smile at him and rip open the presents. Inside I find a necklace, it's the head of a wolf. I have always had a weird obsession with wolves, ever since I was a little kid. Everything was about wolves, my clothes had wolves on them. My toys had to do with wolves and everything else was about wolves.

I gently take the necklace out of it's box and place it around my neck. I thank my dad and he hugs me firmly. When we break the hug, my mom is already handing me the next present. I open it and inside I find a small figurine, it's of a woman and a girl hugging each other. On the bottom it says, the love between a mother and a daughter is forever. I look at my mother and she starts to tear up and I hug her.

"I love you." she whispers in my ear and I hug her even tighter.

"My turn!" Hayden says. He grabs a enormous present from the box and hands it to me. I open it and look at him strangely.

"Where did you get this?" I say while laughing. Inside was a six pack of beer.

"I bought it for you. Well, dad did. But since you're 18 you can drink now."

"Thank you, Hayden." I say and hug him.

...

The morning went by in a blur and lots of bacon. Tomorrow was the day of the choosing and everyone knew how dangerous it could be if you were picked by the wrong animal. Everyone said it was an exciting event, but I didn't feel any excitement. As I sit on the couch watching the news, I think to myself. Which animal would I get chosen by? All of the different spirit animals had different traits. The raven has mysterious and intelligent traits, while the bear has powerful and bold traits. I really wish they had a spirit animal that was a wolf. The Chosen can only be selected by 3 animals: The bear, the raven and the tiger. Although, the other side still had spirit animals, no one really knew what they were.

I didn't realize I had fallen asleep on the couch. I opened my eyes and looked at the red digits now facing me. It read 5:45 a.m.

Hardly did I know that tomorrow would change my life forever.
