It's really quite scary what a smile can hide.
If you sit down and really observe people, you will see it. Usually, people smile to hide the sadness that pulls down on their brain as if there were a chain and ball wrapped around it. Some wear these smiles to hide the anxiety and the stress of life. Frowns are seen as such a horrible thing that people decided that a good replacement would be something just as fake as their feelings.
Sometimes the smiles, if we can even call them that, hide the dark secrets imprinted like tattoos in one's brain. Secrets darker than the deepest parts of the ocean. Perhaps they were hiding their depression or suicidal thoughts. The thoughts that only some can handle; the thoughts that mess with a head so much others begin to believe it too.
People may wear this beam of fake happiness to hide how they feel about themselves. Ugly, dumb, weird, fat, unimportant. We all tend to feel these things about ourselves, but some think about it on the daily. So they hide it with a smile.
Smiles hide the pain we feel while going through everyday life, whether it be emotional or physical. Horrible home lives covered with the simplest, most minuscule that comes oh so naturally to people. Disabilities lightly faded by wearing even the thinnest mask of happy.
That's why I tend to lean away from this horrid trend that ruins society. I show my true emotions and how I feel on a day to day basis with my frowns and with my smirks. But sometimes, the world becomes such a dark place and a fake smile is needed to carry me through the day.
Some people I know never smile, not even a fake one. They sit alone and are always wearing a discouraging look upon their face. To some, fake happiness comes naturally and it seems to just pour out from their heads like a fountain spurting water.
The pretty girls, the popular girls, the queen bees. They wear them even more often than anyone. No one could possibly see that they are as fake as the makeup that cakes their face every single day. Their smile is that of a sales clerk- a wide grin that shows all of their teeth but they are dead behind the eyes.
Smiles are quite scary, don't you think?
