A/N: Well, when I first decided to write this story, I hadn't planned to make a prologue. But now, I think it'll be nice to have a bit of background to this. Hope you guys like this. ***decided to re-edit chapters 0-10***
Avril’s POV
I woke up early on a Sunday afternoon, excited to spend the day with my dad. He was busy yesterday with some paperwork for his job, but he said we could play in the park today – me, my sister May, my mom, and my dad. I rushed down stairs to find them, but the house was empty. I looked in the kitchen, the living room, even the backyard. No one was here. May was still asleep upstairs, and mom and dad’s room was empty. The only place I didn’t check was dad’s study. Dad said we weren’t allowed in there unless he said so. But I was scared, they never left us alone before. I made my way over to the door of dad’s study. I was about to open the door when I heard some hushed whispers from the other side. I quietly pressed my ear to the door. I don’t usually snoop, but this sounded important, and I think I heard my name.
“– dear, you can take care of the kids while I’ll be gone. I promise I won’t be long.”
“What do you want me to tell them, Jared? Avril is too smart to not know something’s up.”
Something’s up? What do they mean? What’s happening? I focused back on the conversation.
“Sarah, listen to me. Hey, hey, don’t cry.” Mom was crying? This had to be bad. I’ve never seen mom cry before. “With all this research I’ve done, I’m sure I’ll only be gone a few months; enough to prove my hypotheses and come back.”
“But what if you don’t Jared? What if they still don’t believe you? Besides, how will you know if the catalyst is true? Please, just – I can’t lose more than -”
I accidently slid against the floor and fell on my bum. Stupid socks. The door opened and I looked up to see dad and mom looking down at me. I could tell mom was actually crying from her red eyes. And dad had a sad smile on his face.
“Avril, honey; how much did you hear of what we were saying?” I heard mom sniffling – why was she crying so much?
“I-I don’t know dad. I just heard you were going somewhere… and..and that mom was worried. Why is she so worried dad? Where are you going?” Dad helped me up off the floor and crouched down to my level.
“It’s nothing, Avril. NASA just called me this morning and wants me to do another mission for them. That’s all.” What I heard in there sure didn’t sound like nothing.
“But.. if it’s nothing to worry about, why is mom crying?” A frown formed on his face as he thought.
“Avril, the job your dad has to do isn’t easy,” mom was trying to explain something here. “But he’s the best at what he does, and I’m just worried that other people will be jealous of him and maybe make his job harder for him. That’s all.” My mom bent down and hugged me tightly, and soon my dad joined in too.
“Don’t worry about this Avril. By the time you finish school, I’ll be back.” Dad said to me.
“I love you.” I told him.
“Love you too, kiddo.”
