A what-if slash what-could-have-been moment for Sam and Jake from the story 'One of the Boys' by knightsrachel. The scene is from Chapter 19, where the Homecoming King and Queen was already announced and was already dancing. (Credits to the owner of the picture)
"Can I get the runner-ups to join?" the DJ called.
I'm waiting for the runner-ups to step up but wait... That's me and Jake!
Ryan removed his arms around my waist and distanced himself a bit. I looked at him and he just shrugged, then I looked at Jake. As I remember correctly, we've never really tried slow dancing before.
"It's cool man. Really. Dance with her." Ryan smiled to Jake.
Why am I feeling that there's a bit of an awkward atmosphere surrounding us three right now?
So to break whatever that is, I offered my hand to Jake and said, "Shall we, Anderson?"
His face broke into a grin and accepted my hand. "After you, Evans" I led him to the dance floor and joined Brennan and Carly.
"Congratulations," I said to Carly, with a sickly sweet smile.
"I'm sorry you lost," Carly said, matching my smile.
"It's alright, this makes us even."
My attention was diverted to Jake when he placed both his hands on my waist. Immediately, I positioned my hands on his shoulder but he got it and placed it around his nape. Now, we're so close to each other.
"Because you're Jake, I would allow you to put your filthy hands on my sister's waist." Brennan said.
Jake only rolled his eyes and said, "Lucky me, then" and we swayed to the song - more like we rocked back and forth.
I didn't notice that we've already distanced ourselves from Brennan and Carly, who by the way, were whispering to each other's ears and smiling shyly as if they were freshmen.
My brother's a flirt!
"Hey, Sam." Jake said softly.
As if on cue, the song changes to "Best Friend" by Jason Chen. (If you don't know the song, please please please listen to it. It will add up to the feels for Sam and Jake)
This is the first time I've heard an acoustic version of this song. I don't know why but when the music started, I looked at Jake straight to the eyes.
"What?" I said when he was also staring at me.
Now I realize you are the only one
It's never too late to show it.
"I know I am not always complimenting you, or probably I've never complimented you aside from your skills in football." He was still staring at me
"Cut to the chase, Anderson" I murmured. I look away because I DON'T KNOW. We've been more intimate than this, we cuddle when we sleep. But something... Something....
"I just wanted to say that... "
"That you really look like a girl right now, Evans. Wow! I'll give credits to Alexis for your make-up" I looked up again when I heard what he said, and boy, he was smiling from ear to ear.
