A/N
When you see *** that's when you should play the song if you want to listen along.

*Alex POV*
John and I were walking back to our dorm from History.

"You should really stop getting into arguments with Mr. Washington" John put his arm around my shoulder and laughed.

"I cant help it! He was forgetting to include all the important details!" I yelled back at him.

"I think you're the only one who cares about that". He looked down at me and laughed.

"Fine but don't look at me when you take the finals and there's a question about why Leslie Odom Jr. shot Lin-Manuel Miranda." I crossed my arms and sighed.

"Your extensive knowledge about American History is adorable".

I could feel my cheeks start to heat up and a smile spread across my face.

"I'm a nerd". I responded

"A cute nerd, then". He giggled.

"Shut up".

I unlocked the door and we walked inside. I went straight to my laptop to start writing. John sat down on the couch and started reading.

We stayed here for about an hour, when an old song started to play in my head. I could hear the melody playing but I couldn't figure out where I knew the song from. It sounded so familiar, but I could only remember a few chords. I took out my phone and searched the lyrics; hopefully I could find the song. A song popped up and I clicked on the link that brought me to the video. A few of the words played and I instantly knew where I heard this from. It was the song my mother used to sing to my brother and I. Tears started streaming down my face as flashbacks from the nights I spent with my sick mother flooded into my mind. I remember the last time she sang it to me. I was bringing medicine to her in bed and she told me to come lay with her.

*Flashback*

"Alexander sweetie, come lay with me for a minute".

I climbed up to the bed and layed next to her. She was propped up by all the pillows behind her. I sat in her lap, her arms wrapped around me and my head lying on her chest.

"Yes, Mommy?"

"I love you, Alexander, you know that right?" She ran her fingers through my short hair.

"Of course I do! I love you too".

I started to cough and she told me to take some medicine. I sat straight up and she gave me a spoonful of the medicine that I had brought to her.

I layed back in her lap and we sat there for a while.

I looked up to her and asked, "Mommy, can you sing that song that you always sing to James and I?"

She smiled and kissed the top of my head.

"Of course, darling".

She started to sing the song, and soon I drifted off to sleep in her arms.

*Flashback over*

I listened to the song fully and then restarted it. I could hear John open up the cabinets in the kitchen.

Please don't walk in here. Please.

He shuffled around for a while and then the noises stopped. Please let him have sat back down and continued to read.
