The semi-trailer came out of nowhere. There was the scream of tyres, battling for purchase on the slippery road as we careered wildly across the dark cement. Then suddenly we were at the bridge, and the guardrail was rushing up to meet us.

The last thing I saw before we slipped into thin air was the great headlights of the semi-trailer, shining like angels of death through the gray curtain of rain and setting the droplets on fire with an unnatural radiance.

Then we were falling, at the mercy of gravity. The water was swirling like death's very own hands around us. Then everything faded around the edges and disappeared like breath on a cold morning.

That image will inhabit the dark corners of mind for as long as I live.

"Its a bloody miracle she survived. Never in my life would I have thought that was possible."

Huh? Survived what?

Then it all came flooding back. Those lights, the water. I was so sure I was going to die.

I began to notice my surroundings. There was a harsh beeping notice coming from somewhere to my right. My nostrils were filled the smell of illness, skillfully covered with a constant flow of disinfectant. The hospital. I cracked open my eyes and instantly a middle aged woman dressed in blue was fussing over me, and a  man in a white jacket was hovering behind her, studying me intently. It was a little unnerving. I began to sit up, but the nurses hand was on my shoulder straight away, pushing back onto he starched white sheets of the hospital bed.

"Easy, Honey, don't try to do anything yet. Just lie back and rest. The doctor wants to ask you a few questions, okay?"

I nodded, and he white coated doctor stepped forward, holding his clipboard in font of him like a weapon.

"Can you tell me your name?"

"Mercy Gale." I replied.

"Do you know how old you are?"

"Sixteen."

He proceeded to ask when my birthday was, what school did I go to and some other simple questions, his pen scratching furiously over his clipboard all the while. I finally drew the line at 'how many fingers am I holding up?'.

"I'm fine, you know."

He just nodded, then turned and left the room, his white coat billowing behind him. I looked at the nurse's kind face, and finally plucked up the courage to ask the question I had been dreading.

"Are my family okay?"

Her face softened in sympathy, and I knew the answer to my question before the words even left her mouth.

"I'm sorry Honey, they didn't make it."

My whole world came crashing down.
