Luke looked out at the freedom beyond the tall metal fence through the small window in his cold room. He looked around and wondered what he had ever done to deserve his whole life in these four stained smelly walls. Well from what he had herd when he was listening to Martha, the lady who gave him food talk to his parents which he hasn't seen since they left him here as a baby he understood that he would stay until he "cured" but the poor boy didn't know what that meant or how he was supposed to achieve it. The only thing he ever wanted was to leave this horrible place.
Luke had seen and talked to many kids before but none of them were his real friends. The one person who didn't leave him yet was the old lady who would visit him everyday and make a blanket for him but then she would disappear and the blanket would turn to ashes. Luke figured she was his grandma or something. He used to like the old lady since she brought him company though she never talked but soon he got frustrated with her because she would never listen to him when he begged her to stay and she would always vanish. He came to the conclusion that she was deaf.
One day Martha was about to open the door to give Luke his food but then she heard him yelling at the old lady because she was starting to get up from her rocking chair like she always did before she and the rocking chair left him all alone. He pulled her by the hair and kicked her but she still went on with the regular routine. This frustrated him because even if she was deaf she definitely could have predicted that hike trying to hold her down in her chair meant that he wanted her to stay. Martha slowly opened the door after a while and just gave him a worried look because she knew there was no hope in convincing him that there was no one there.
