"Lee do you yield?" Alexander cried, after John Laurens shot his gun. The bullet had hit Charles just above his hip, and he had fallen over from the blow. Aaron had ran towards him as soon as it happened, pleading that he was alright. "You shot him in the side, yes he yields!". He lifted Charles slowly so as not to hurt him anymore than he already was.

"Here comes the general!" He heard people shouting. He closed his eyes and let out a low sigh "this should be fun".

"What is the meaning of this?" George shouted, a fiery rage in his eyes. "Mister Burr, get a medic for the general". Aaron stood up, supporting Charles so he could actually walk. "Yes sir".

George spoke to Charles, but he couldn't hear him. Everything he saw was blurry, and any noise felt distant. He leaned on Aaron, relying solely on his strength to keep him upright. He was soon lay down on a cold floor. He shivered.

The nurse immediately began tending to his wound, Charles winced at every touch. He noticed Aaron stand up.

"Burr" he called. Aaron turned around "yes?". He coughed "stay with me, please? If I am to die, I want you to be by my side when I do."

Aaron knelt beside Charles, taking his hand. "No, Lee, you're not going to die. I won't allow it". Charles let out a weak laugh "I was shot, most people die after they got shot." Aaron shook his head "only if it's infected, you'll be bandaged up and you'll be okay".

Charles gave a meek smile and cupped Aaron's cheek with one hand.
"The first stage of grief is denial. The last stage is acceptance. It's seems you and I are on completely different stages"
Aaron felt tears well up in his eyes, but he fought them back, he couldn't cry, not in front of Charles, especially not now. He had to be strong.

Charles intertwined their fingers and squeezed Aaron's hand lightly. "I'll miss you, love". Burr simply shook his head "I won't let you die. You can't. I need you here".

Charles laughed "no one needs me" he explained "I've killed so many men, I deserve this. You heard Hamilton; "inexperienced and ruinous"'.

Burr didn't look him in the eye, he let his head lower as tears threatened to roll down his cheeks. "You don't deserve any of this, you were scared, it's human nature. I swear to God I'll get Alexander back for this"

He looked up. Charles had fallen asleep.

God, he hoped he was asleep.
