Now with Wei gone we were down to five people left, Danny, Marc, Hank, Will, and I. In the morning we said goodbye to the men at Chartres and wished them luck, not that they were gonna need it but it's always nice to have a little more hope in something than you did earlier. We made our way south and eventually reached a wooded area, we were about three miles away from our objective so we weren't stopping to day. The idea was to make it to the objective as fast as possible and with as little casualties as possible, I was hopping that that would be none but unfortunately Wei and I made a stupid mistake and now he's gone.
We decided to run the rest of the way there just to be there quicker. It was a tiring three miles, I was in the front of the group and I stopped suddenly without telling the others,
"Get down, be quite."
We all dropped to the ground. I looked towards what looked like a plane but I was't quite sure i looked to Marc,
"Give me your spotting scope."
"Here ya go." He handed me the scope and i looked towards the rubble. It was defiantly a plane, the engine was smoking, the wings were bent and broken, in big white numbers on the mangled tail of the plane it said "289" I wasn't sure f that was the plane we were looking for but the clues led to this plane so I assumed that this was the plane. I looked around the plane, there were two German soldiers searching the plane and four guarding the plane, I'm still to this day not sure how they didn't see us. I whispered to my boys,
"Listen up, there are four men guarding the plane and two searching. The two searching the plane look to be only equipped with their pistols so we should be fine with those, actually try and see if we can keep em' alive for questioning. The four guards are equipped with automatic weapons so we're gonna have to take them out as fast as possible. Marc is there any chance you can move about fifty feet to our right to see if you can see anymore men and if not try to take out the men farther away then us."
"Okay I'll try." Marc started to crawl away from us he eventually made it about where I wanted him. He took his spotting scope and looked around the rest of the plane that I couldn't see. he looked towards he and held his hand in front of his face, he put his thumb and ring finger together which usually meant that he did not see anyone else and he was gonna take the first shot. I signaled to him "okay."
"When you hear Marc take the shot, I want Will to take out the guy closest to the guy Marc is about to kill, Hank will take the guy closest to us, and I'll take the last one."
Danny looked over to me and whispered,
"What about me sir?"
"You're gonna read up on your German, and you're gonna talk to those guys searching the plane."
"Yes sir." He looked worried as if he didn't know what he was doing but I knew that he know. "Probably just nerves" I thought.
We waited for the signal, about a minute past until we heard the gun shot, us three, Will, Hank, and I, got up and started to fire at our assigned targets while Danny started to read his German dictionary.
"Everyone okay?"
Everyone responded with "Yes."
"Were we able to keep those two alive?"
Marc responded,
"Affirmative."
We all walked up towards the two Germans, Danny was leading saying,
"Entspannen Sie sich"
The Germans replied with,
"Bitte töte uns nicht."
Danny started to yell at them louder than I've ever heard Danny yell before. Danny looked towards us and looked as if he wanted us to tell him what to say, I told him,
"Ask him if they found anything on this plane."
Danny reluctantly asked,
"Hast du auf diesem Flugzeug etwas gefunden?"
The Germans looked at each other as if they didn't know if they found anything,
"Wir haben nichts gefunden, bitte lass uns gehen!"
"What does that mean?"
"It means "We didn't find anything, please let us go" I think they have something that they sont want us knowing about."
"I agree tell them that if they don't tell the truth then we're gonna kill them."
Danny thought for a minute, then he turned towards the scared soldiers and said,
"Sag uns die Wahrheit oder wir werden dich töten."
I saw one of the men were tearing up, I started to think to myself that these guys were probably just normal people who were drafted into this mess. The other man started to speak,
"Okay, wir haben dieses Stück Papier gefunden, bitte lass uns gehen!"
The man handed Danny a piece of folded paper Danny handed it to me.
"Okay Danny tell them to start walking north until they hit Omaha beach where they will yell "flash" until they are seized up by american forces."
Danny shook his head in agreement and turned to them,
"Gehen Sie nach Norden, bis sie den Omaha-Strand treffen, wo sie "blinken" werden, bis sie von amerikanischen Kräften ergriffen werden."
The Germans immediately stood to their feet and started running north as fast as they possibly could, within a minute we couldn't see them any more.
"Okay listen up, search this plane. Danny translate this note."
"Uhh sir, this note is in french I believe I can't translate this."
I wasn't quite sure if he was telling the truth of not so I grabbed the note from his hand and it was in french.
"Does anyone know how to read French?"
They all looked at me with the same expression that said "Nope." I started to have to think of what we were going to do. The nearest town was only one mile east of our position, or we could start making our way back to Omaha, it was about four in the after noon so we would have to stop somewhere any way so I decided to go to the town to the east.
"Okay men listen up, we have two options, we can either stop back at Chartres or we can take a little detour towards east where we will be able to stop for the night."
They all talked amongst each other for about a minute. Even though it didn't matter because had already made up my mind we were going to stop at the town to the east. They all looked at me and Hank spoke out,
"We would like to stop at the town to the east."
I was relieved when Hank said that because I hate being the bad guy in situations like that.
"Alright then lets be on our way."
