As the owl lands, it decides to perch on my lap. It sticks out its scrawny leg. Umm... It's acting a little strange, isn't it? I've never been this close to any sort of bird before. It is undeniably a beautiful bird. It's feathers remind me of leaves falling off of trees in Autumn. And the woods in spring. Its thin leg is still hanging out. It's waiting for something. It pecks my finger, waking me up from my observational daydream. My heart races as I slowly reach for the note, expecting every second for the owl to fly away. But, even as I gingerly clasped my fingers around the note, it didn't fly away. I begin to slowly untie the knot and it gives me an irritated peck. I quickly pull away. It rolls its eyes. It sort of closes them and then opens them again, but I felt the eye roll. It was so creepy. The owl bends its head down and bites at the letter, obviously realising that I am NOT taking it. It begins to bite and tear at the rope around its thin straw-leg and I gaze on, completely detached from the situation. What is this owl doing? It obviously has excessively more intelligence than the average tawny owl. It eventually finishes its job and it picks up the letter. It throws the letter in my face and I laugh and pick it up. All of my worries have flushed away, even the creepy eye roll isn't creepy anymore. I quickly open the envelope, not bothering to check if it was mine. I mean it just got chucked into my face by an owl, I'm pretty sure it's mine. Inside the envelope was a piece of... parchment? No, two pieces of parchment. I pull out the first one and it says,
Miss Y/n L/n
The Gap In The End Wall
The Alley Behind Big Ben

Dear Miss L/n,
We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Please find enclosed a list of all the necessary books and equipment.
Term begins on September 1. We await your owl by no later than July 31.
Yours sincerely,
Minerva McGonagall
Deputy Headmistress.
A School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Sounds like a fake by far. But I may as well go for it, it's better than here. But I will probably sleep outside there too; lots of people in one place are quite scary to me. So, the second one is a list of what I need. But everything I need I have to steal, so I hope there isn't much. As I pull out the second parchment, it unrolls and reaches my lap. However, I notice a third piece of parchment inside the envelope. That wasn't mentioned in the letter... I reach for it. The owl in front of me stares confusedly too, it looks like there were only supposed to be two letters. Oh well, let's open it and take a look. I don't have anything to lose right?
This parchment reads:
Miss L/n,
We are well aware of your situation, so we have already sorted you some things for school. The one thing you will have to get yourself is a wand. The owl on your lap is yours, you can name it if you like. We have organised your books and uniform for the first year- the same thing will probably happen for the next few years. Six galleons are also enclosed in the envelope for a wand. The owl will show you where to go, don't worry. Good luck!
~Albus Dumbledore, Headmaster
I think I'm going to get along with this headmaster; he's so informal! Thank god they know what's going on with me, I really hate stealing things. Wait, what's the date today? And what should I call my owl? I look at the top of the letter. It's the 21st of July. That gives me less than two weeks to get my wand and to send the letter back! Well, I'd better start walking, right? While we walk, I will think of what to call the owl. I want a name that means something...
"Okay, so this letter says you're my owl, right?" The owl hoots a little and looks contented. So it is my owl. "I'm not sure what I should call you yet, but I'll think of it while I get my wand. Speaking of which, the letter also said you'd help me get there?" The owl hoots again. "Okay, then let's go!" The owl gets up and onto my shoulder as I stand up, but I immediately collapse back on the floor.
"Umm... Maybe let's go tomorrow?"
The owl looks worried now as my face and hands get paler.
"I'm just tired, is all. Come on, let's sleep."
The owl ignores me and looks at my empty lunch box. It looks back to me and, just in time, my stomach rumbles. (A/N: My stomach literally just rumbled then. Like right then.) The owl looks at my face and suddenly pecks at my T-shirt and lifts it up quickly, seeing my rib cage easily sticking out from the rest of my body. I look guiltily at the owl as it practically glares at me and flies off. I lie down and my stomach rumbles again. It's gone to get food for us both. I could get used to this...
Hell, I think I'm crazy. I'm talking to an owl which is going to lead me to get a wand so I can go to a magic school. This homelessness stuff really is driving me around the bend. Literally.
I'm swept off by the world of dreams and the last thing I hear is the desperate rumbling of my stomach.
