The little girl's cry rang through the house, "M-mommy?" Her frail frame shook at the sight as her gaze jumped from the moonlight cast upon her Mother's seemingly still body, not noticing the slight choking breath, to her Father's blood coated hands and face. The sight was truly terrifying, the way her Father stood over her Mother, a kitchen knife tightly gripped in his hand, the blood was not his own, but that of Kaiya, his wife of nine years. Alarmed, the girl backed away, this was too much for her seven year old brain to comprehend. Her body moved on its own "Mommy!" she cried, flinging herself down next to the body. "Wake up, wake up!" She sobbed. Her Father stumbled back in shock, with glazed over brown eyes.
"Masako" came the quiet reply. "You have to listen to me" her Mother whispered urgently while taking the child's small hand into her own. "Run. Get away from here baby. Run as fast and as far as you can. Don't stop, don't look back. Keep moving. Try to make it to America. Please do this for mommy. Masako, I love you." As the woman said these words she dropped her hands down. "Go" she whispered, giving the child a small push.
The tears streamed down the child's cheeks as she stood and did as her Mother said. She ran. As she got to the door, she turned back once, the sight of her Father bringing the knife down on her Mother's beautiful, still body repeatedly gave her the incentive to sprint as fast as she could down the quiet, empty street. She didn't look back again. "I hate him, how could he? Mom, I promise I will make him pay."
"-ako. Masako. Hello? This is planet Earth trying to reach the space bound brunette."
As the training room came back into focus, a fair skinned girl who looked no older than thirteen, stood in front of Masako, one hand on her hip, the other pushing up her glasses from the tip of her nose. Her deep black hair that came just to her chest was pulled back into a ponytail to keep the frizzy mess from her face.
"Sorry Shay. Just daydreaming" Masako apologized with a small bow, shaking the memory off.
"You two just gonna stand there all day? Masako, I would expect this from you, but dragging such a studious girl into your shenanigans" the muscular young man teased.
"You know Damian, I wouldn't daydream if you would actually teach us something of value" Masako retorted her instructor.
"Ouch" the man said clutching his chest as if her words caused him physical pain. "Well I suppose today we could do some knife throwing."
Shay's eyes lit up with excitement at this. "R-really?! We're gonna learn knife throwing? Please don't be joking Damian."
"Why would I joke about training?"
Embarrassment flooded through Shay as she mumbled "Right, sorry."
"Well let's go then. Move it, to the practice dummies" Damian barked, startling the two girls.
Shay hurried over while Masako just rolled her eyes and slowly walked over, joining the rest of the class. Damian stood in front of the students, a completely different person than from only moments ago.
"Break is over, get your asses over here! Today will be a knife throwing lesson" his biceps bulging as his golden arms crossed. "If you can't hit close to the bullseye by the end of the day, you will do: sixteen laps around the track, one-hundred push-ups, two-hundred sit-ups and fifty pull-ups. That goes for guys and girls."
With three knives in his hand, the instructor marched over to a line of tape and stood behind it "If you don't want a knife in your back, I'd move out of the way" Damian growled, flipping the knife in his hand. When the crowd cleared he aligned his body correctly focusing on the target. "The key is make sure you're comfortable with the knife, know how to keep a level head in tough situations, which will come later." With a quick flick of his wrist the knife shot out of his hand and embedded itself right in the dummy's stomach, a perfect bullseye. He then slowed the whole process down, showing each individual step, once again the knife was in the bullseye, with the third knife he took a deep breath, covered his eyes, the sent it off.
