He lay in his bed and stared at the wall on the other side of his room. It was dark except a narrow strip of light from under the door.
Today it was his birthday. His ninth birthday and now he was really a big boy, he thought.
So he didn´t cry when he fell down with his new bike and hit his knee. He was very proud that he was so brave! But now when he was so lonely in his dark room, nevertheless it was a bit scary.
„But“ , he said to himself „I am now nine years old. Little babies would be scared and would cry. I will not be scared. I will not cry!“
Brave as he was, he didn´t hide under his blanket. He looked arround in his room. And then he saw it.
Definitely!
His armchair had claws!
On both armrests there were long, dark claws. And he thought the armchair was usually smaller. Or not?
His heart beat faster. Slowly he turned his gaze away from the armchair. And was shocked again!
There seemed to be a shadow from a small animal or something like that. A very thin creature with a very big head.
Scary!
Or was it only the shadow from his desk lamp?
No. That couldn´t be. He was sure it was a scary creature!
But it didn´t move?
Probably the creature was watching him.
Oh God!
And was waiting fort he perfect moment to attack him.OH GOD!
Fearing to see the creature a little bit longer or anything else like that, he closed his eyes.
Relieved he sank back into his pillows.
But this relief did not last long. He heard a noise. A weird noise.„Tok…tok…tok…“
It sounds like steps.
Or like waterdrops which driped from a broken faucet?
„No, more like steps“ he thought. „the creature must be walking arround in my room!“
He didn´t dare to move for a long, long time...
At least 30 seconds!
Then there was no noise anymore.Slowly he opened his eyes. The shadow was at the same place as before.
„Mmh…“ he thought „then there must be another thing…“And suddenly he knew what:
There was a monster under his bed!!
This realation was very hard for him. In his dispair he did the one and only thing a nine year old boy could do:
„MOOOOOM!“
… silence ….
„MOOO-OOOM!“
…His mum rushed into his room.
„Whats happened?“ she turned his desk lamp on. „There is… there…“ He sobbed „a… a monster…“ he sobbed again „under my bed!“
„There is no monster under your bed my dear.“
„But..“
His mother sighed „No, there is no monster. Please let me go to bed and sleep. I´m very tired.
First I couldn´t sleep because the faucet dripped all the time and now… now you´ve seen a monster…“
„But…“ he said again. Then he looked around in his room. And really, his mom was right. There were no scary shadows or claws or weird noises anymore. And no monster.
His mom stood up „Sleep well my dear. I´m sure now the monster is sleeping, too.“
Before she left the room she went to the armchair and took the scarf, whose frayed ends have hung over the armrests and turned his desk lamp off.
Now he was alone in his dark room again. And he knew,
the monster was under his bed again…!
