  "_________________! I choose you!"

Finally, my first pokemon battle. All ten years of my life have led to this very moment. I've never felt more emotionally attached to anything in my entire life. My heart is pounding, I'm sweating bullets, but at the same time I'm determined to show show this jerk just who's the better pokemon trainer. But, I guess I should tell you how I got here.

It all started from last night. I was up late on my P.C., re-watching all of my favorite pokemon battles from the pokemon league, and also trying desperately to remember all of the different relationships between all of the pokemon types ( even though every time I try, I always fail to remember all of them). I would've stayed up all night if my mother had never told me to go to bed.I went to bed, but I couldn't sleep. The thought of not only getting my first pokemon, but starting my journey kept me up all night. I was also thinking of which pokemon I would choose. "Charmander, Bulbasaur or Squirtle." I constantly thought this to my self. I tried my best collect my thoughts in order to weigh in all the pros. and cons of each option, but I still wasn't able to make the decision then. I was finally about to drift to sleep, but my alarm went off just in that moment. It was 7:30, even though I wasn't supposed to be at the professor's lab until nine. I bathed, brushed my teeth, combed my hair and put on my clothes. I put on a black  t shirt, a red jacket with white sleeves and collars, blue jeans, and red and white sneakers. Finally, I put on the red and white cap my father gave me just before he,... uh..., never-mind. I packed my backpack with water, clothes, underwear, you know, the essentials. I was about to go down stairs when I noticed that a potion was sitting on my table beside the P.C.. It had a note attached to it; "-Remember to have fun on your journey, From Mom". Admittedly, the note actually made me shed a tear.

I went down stairs and greeted my mom. "High deer, would you like some breakfast?", my mother asked. "No thanks mom, I'm already running kind of late" I responded. I wasn't telling a lie, it was already 10 minutes to nine. I bid her farewell, and she did the same back to me. I walked to the professor's lab but when I got there one of his aids told me he wasn't there. "Hmm, the old fool probably went out to do some field research and forgot he was supposed give me a pokemon today", I thought to myself. I went to where route one meets the end of pallet town to go and see if he was there. I couldn't see professor Oak from where I was standing so I decided that I was going to go further down the route to find him. I was just about to put my foot into the tall grass when suddenly I heard, "Hey wait, don't go into the tall grass!". It was professor Oak. "It's unsafe, wild pokemon live in tall grass! You need your own pokemon for your own protection!", he yelled. "So when are you going give me mine like you said you would?", I snapped. "Oh, you're Red aren't you? Sorry for yelling. I forgot that I was supposed to give you your first pokemon today. Here, follow me to my lab". And before I could get a chance to ask him where he was, he was dragging me by the arm to his lab.

By the time we got to his lab my arm was sore, but that didn't stop me from getting exited. We went to the back of his lab and he showed me three pokeballs that were lined up neatly against each other on a table. Beside each pokeball there was a picture and description of the pokemon inside the pokeball displayed on a small card. The description included the name, type and pokedex entry of the pokemon. The professor was briefing me on all the ways to be a good pokemon trainer when he was interrupted by his grandson and my lifelong rival, Blue. "Hey Gramps, I'm here for my pokemon. Oh great, the loser's here too!". He was referring to me when he said loser. "Oh, hello Blue you're just in time to get your first pokemon, along with your friend Red" the professor said. "We're not friends!" Blue and I said simultaneously. "Wait, he's getting his first pokemon today too?", I asked in disbelief. "Yeah loser, surprising isn't it", he said. As surprised as I was, I wasn't going to let Blue ruin this moment for me. "Blue, if you're done we'd like to get on with it please" the professor scolded. "Anyway, which one of you would like to choose first", the professor asked. "Go ahead Red, you can choose first" Blue said. I decided to accept his invitation (even though he was clearly trying to see which type I would pick just so he would know which pokemon to pick in order get the type advantage over mine. But I wasn't going to allow petty competition to dictate my choice).

Before this moment I wasn't sure which one I was going to pick. But in the moment, my mind went to my father and the name he gave me, so I decided to make my decision based on that. I picked Charmander. My rival, Blue, coincidentally picked Squirtle, though I doubt it was because of his name. The professor congratulated us and sent us on our way. I was just about to leave when - "Hey, wait up Red. Let's test out our pokemon" and before I knew it I was in my very first pokemon battle.

Blue sends out his pokemon, Squirtle, without any hesitation. "Uhh, how do I do that Professor?" I asked. "Just press the small button on the center of the pokeball and throw it," he responded. I did just that, and as I did it I yelled at the top of my voice,"Charmander! I choose you!". Charmander came out of my pokeball following a flash of bright white light. "Hold on you two, you can't have a pokemon battle without knowing the basics first. Red your Charmander only knows the attacks Scratch and Growl now, and Blue, Squirtle only knows Tackle and Growl. As your pokemon get stronger they will eventually learn new moves but for now they'll only respond to the commands I just told you about". After hearing this a surge of adrenaline went through my body. With grit and determination I yelled "Charmander, use Scratch!" Charmander rushed to the Squirtle and used its sharp claws to slap the Squirtle in the face, but before I could celebrate Blue commanded his Squirtle to retaliate with tackle. Squirtle rushed towards Charmander head first and slammed its head into Charmander's chest. Our pokemon duked it out for about 10 minutes, and in the end I won by the smallest of margins. "Hmmph, I picked the wrong pokemon" said Blue, just before storming out of the building. It was at this moment I knew that my pokemon journey had begun.
