You would think that at 17 years old you had a little freedom. That your curfew was a little later and you could go anywhere you pleased with your friends, not having to check in with your parents that much. Or that you could at least have an opinion and not feel so guilty about standing up for what you believed.
"Jelena, get down from there! You're gonna fall!" I stood on the edge of the roof with my eyes closed, looking out at the heavens that stretched above me. Up here, they didn't seem so far away. It was as if I could reach up and touch them. With the wind in my hair and the beauty of the red and golden sky before me, I almost forgot about the busy cars bellow me, and a 30 foot fall that could possibly kill me. "Mario, Jelena's on the roof again!"
"Jelena, get down from there! Seriously, that's enough." I sighed as I turned around to my friends grabbing both of my hands, helping me down on to safe ground.
I take a look at my friends, Mario and Kalani. Kalani sighs of relief and Mario throws his hands over his head.
"Jelena, have you gone crazy or something?!"
"I'm fine, Mario."
"Are you really? Because I don't know if you were paying attention, with your eyes closed and all, but you were standing on the edge of THE ROOF!"
"Calm down, Kalani. I'm fine, nothing happened."
"Not this time, at least. What were you even doing up there anyway?" Mario pulled out a blunt from his back pocket and a lighter from his jacket. The flame from the lighter glowed as he began to light up.
"Put that away! My mom would kill me if she smelt weed on me."Kalani's eyes widen as she pushed my shoulder back.
"The last thing your mom needs to be worrying about is smelling a little weed on you, she needs to check you in a hospital and figure out why you think it's okay to stand on the edge of buildings!"
"I wasn't going to fall."
"Yeah, but you could've."
"I wasn't going to, though."
"You could've."
"I wasn't going to."
"Girl don't argue with me, not today." Kalani put her hand up, as she headed over to Mario, taking the blunt from him and taking a hit of it, herself. Mario blew his smoke into the air and watched as it disappeared.
"What were you doing up there anyway, Jae?" My head lifted back up towards the sky, where the streaks of white clouds and the pink sky formed a line. I basked in its glory.
"I was dreaming......."
----------------------------------------------"Jelena, don't forget I'm going to be home later than usual, today. I'm working late and I have a staff meeting with my boss. Hopefully, he finally sees all the hard work I've been doing and hands me over that promotion."
"You'll get it mom, I know you will. No one else is qualified for that promotion, but you. Your boss would be blind if he didn't hand it over to you." I watched my mom as she washed the last of the dishes, even though I was still eating my own breakfast. She laughed slightly.
