Definition of synesthesia:
Using more then one sense at a time.
Examples: warm (touch) colours (sight), bitter (taste) cold (touch), silent (hearing) sun (sight).

This is actually a disorder (sorry for the bad wording) where people can taste words or a certain word might be a colour to them. Cool right?!

In writing it can be used to give a thorough description and can help bring the reader into it. Especially in fantasy or weird books like Alice in wonderland type where she enters a world different then ours.
It's very sophisticated to analyse and to use. *raises pinky* have fun with that one.
