"So you really don't know how long I'll be away for?" I asked Erik, as we stood outside my house, watching Mike haul my suitcase into Erik's car.
"It all depends on how you progress. Seeing though your angel half hasn't awakened yet, it might be several months." he replied dryly.
"Several months?! Your not serious." I asked desperately.
Erik looked at me almost sympathetically. Did he actually feel sorry for me? No, of course he didn't; this was his job.
"Scarlett," Mum announced, walking towards me with a small box in her hand.
I swallowed with guilt. I'd shut her out last night, but I'd realised how unfair that was, she had no choice but to keep it all from me, for my own safety.
"I've been waiting to give you this."
She handed me the small lilac box, her smile struggling to stay strong.
I opened the box to reveal a bracelet, a white rope design covered in swirly silver patterns with a metal clasp. "Oh," I gasped, "Mum, it's gorgeous." I held it up as she helped me fastened it around my wrist.
"Thankyou," I smiled at her, embracing her in a hug.
"Just something I was hoping you could wear and think of me." She smiled, but slowly it dropped. "I wasn't expecting your father to send for you for a few more years yet. You don't know how sorry I am for not being able to tell you, I wanted to Scar, but-"
"It's alright, Mum, I understand,' I interrupted her." I'll think of you when I wear it, I promise."
Erik cleared his throat. "I'll give you two a moment alone." he said, probably feeling awkward and uncomfortable as he walked over to assist Mike in packing the car.
Mum's eyes followed him. "You can trust him Scarlett. He'll be your guide; your friend."
I didn't really believe that, so far he'd just managed to creep me out. But I wasn't about to tell mum that, she had enough to stress over.
"Yeah," I agreed.
"What have you told Ellie?" asked Mum.
"Nothing yet," I replied, "I can't say goodbye to her."
An ache settled in my chest. The thought of abandoning her with no explanation killed me.
Mum nodded, like she understood. "I'll tell her that you went on a surprise vacation we booked for you."
I managed to pull a smile off at that. "You better make it sound convincing or she'll be onto you." Several memories of Ellie and I flashed like a slideshow in my brain. Only yesterday morning, I was just like her; absolutely clueless about all of this Nephilim business. I was still finding it all hard to register. I'd miss Ellie so much, but the less she knew of the truth, the better.
Mum squeezed me tightly. "I'm gonna miss you so much baby."
"It won't be forever." I said, quoting Mike from last night.
"Your right." A few tears had escaped from her eyes and I wiped them away with my thumb.
"I love you." I told her, meaning it with all my heart.
"I love you too."
I held her tight and presented a fake smile, attempting to hide away my heartbreak.
I gave Mike a hug before climbing into the passengers seat of Erik's comfortable, clean car.
Erik kindly put the window down for me so I could wave goodbye. I took one last glance at my house and my loving parents before Erik drove off towards the highway, my tears making no effort to stay hidden.
