Lily’s POV:

The sun peaks through my sapphire curtains Saturday morning. I groan loudly, eyelids still heavy. Managing to open them, I see that it is 11am. Better get up & get ready for Ashton.

I have Dorothy going to the groomers today so the house will literally be empty except for us. Still haven’t decided whether or not I like that. Sure, Ashton is very, very attractive. But if he keeps this whole antisocial gig up, nothing will ever happen. But nothing would every happen anyways right? I’m popular & he’s not. Popular people don’t date unpopular people. I don’t make the rules & it sucks, but thats how it is. We wouldn’t hear the last of it if anything turned serious. I know he wouldn’t enjoy that kind of attention.

I end my thoughts & leave it at this: Ashton Irwin & I can never be together.

The more I realize this, the sadder I become.   I

grab a quick bagel with Nutella & jump in the shower. I shave my arms & legs & then blow-dry my hair. No one’s ever seen my natural hair; it’s unevenly wavy & frizzy as hell. That’s why I straighten it. Curls have never looked good on me, so stick straight it is.

Once I’m done with my hair, I decide I might as well put makeup on. Fuck school social classes, those never said I couldn’t try to be pretty around a hot guy.

Going simple, I apply foundation & powder along with light eyeliner & mascara. I line my lips with my signature pale lipstick. My lips pop & I smile. I put on some sweats & a pink v neck, simple yet cute. & before I know it, it’s almost 1:30. I go downstairs & wait for the doorbell to ring.

I check my phone more than I should to be honest. Almost every 3 minutes. Either looking at the time or a text from him. Soon enough, it’s 1:35. Being the impatient girl I am, I go to text him. Just as I’m typing in ya coming?, I receive a text from him.

sorry, lily. running late. be there in 5.

I smile sheepishly & reply:

its all good, see ya in a few

Before long I hear the ring of my doorbell. I get up off of my couch & smooth my shirt. My feet hitting the hardwood floor sound like rocks hitting glass. Taking a deep breath, I open the door.

“Hey,” I mutter, looking for his eyes. Surprisingly, I find them. & boy am I not prepared for what I see.   They’re lighter than usual, sparkling rather than crumbling. His wavy fringe covers them a little, but he clears it out the way with his long fingers. I practically melt into the side of my front door until I realize he’s greeted me back. I invite him in & close the door after him, questioning my sanity.

“My laptop is upstairs in my room so we can just go there,” I say, looking back at him as he follows. Ashton looks a bit surprised by this, but accepts as we pitter patter up the carpeted stairs.

I never thought my room was much, just soft blue walls with a bed, drawers, walk-in closet & a white desk. But apparently I’m wrong, because his mouth gapes open when he walks in. Slightly annoyed, I question him.

“Why the open mouth?”

He fumbles with his words & continues to look around like a kid in a candy store.

“I just - It’s - amazing. It’s beautiful.” he practically whispers, looking me in the eyes again. Two eye contacts in a matter of 10 minutes. What’s gotten into this usually shy boy? I’m not sure, but I find myself blushing after his compliment.

Something tells me this day isn’t going to be so bad.

Ashton POV:

I walk up to the crashing sound of glass coming from my kitchen. Looks like my dads out & about for the first time this week. He usually come to the kitchen to eat when we’re at school, but on the weekends he just grabs all the food he can get & goes back to the safety of his room. I wait until I can’t hear any more sounds & go out.

It’s 1 in the afternoon already, which is great. Sleep is everything to me. But then I remember I must go to Lily’s today. Shit.   Honestly, I’m still not sure what to think.

I throw on a black tshirt & a black sweatshirt over it. I grab some jeans & my black converse & go into the bathroom to brush my teeth. It’s 1:15 & I’m on my way out the door when Alice stops me.

“Hey,” she says, positioning herself in front of me. I remind her of my project with Lily & she just shushes me, obviously wanting to talk.

“Look, Ash, I know you like this girl. I know she means a lot to you. But if you never attempt to make a move, you’ll lose her,”

“It’s not like I have a chance with her anyways,” I mutter, putting my head down. Really? Did she really need to do this to me? I’m already nervous enough.

“Ashton Fletcher, look at me.” she demands. The tone of voice she uses lets me know she means business. I sigh & meet her glance.

“Never say that. Ever. You’re my brother & the most important thing in my life. You work your ass off to make sure I’m happy, & all I could ever want for you is to be happy. If you feel strongly about her, go get her.” Alice lectures to me. The glistening of her eyes is enough for me to promise I will. I bring her into an embrace & kiss the crown of her head, keeping my face buried in her hair for a moment. Sometimes I have to remind myself she’s only in third grade, because her way with words reminds me of a person my age.

I turn on the ignition in my car when I realize I’m already 5 minutes late. I shoot Lily a text. She responds immediately & I’m off to the girl of my dream’s house with a spring in my step & some courage.

I ring her doorbell & replay Alice’s words to me. After what seems like forever, Lily opens the door & greets me. As always, she’s absolutely breath-taking, & I can’t help but get lost in her eyes. Those light brown irises get me every time. I manage a hello back as she lets me in her house. While she’s closing the door behind me, I stare in awe at her home.

Before me is a beautiful, carpeted staircase that swirls in every direction. Tall ceilings tower over like giants. I try to hide my amazement as she comes up beside me.

“My laptop is upstairs in my room so we can just go there,” she says, going ahead of me & leading me up the stairs. Her room? Jesus Christ, Alice’s speech didn’t prepare me for this.

Nonetheless I tried to hide my reaction as we winded up the staircase.

She opens up a large white door & walks inside. What I see makes my stomach drop to her basement.

Her. Room. Is. Magnificent.

The walls are covered in a baby blue, clear of any posters or pictures. Her bed rests on a majestic white headboard with a brown duvet. I spot a white desk in the corner, holding her laptop. The size of her room is almost as big as my living room & is overseen by a large window looking out into the woods behind her house.

Perhaps I was gaping too much, because she gives me a funny look & asks why my mouth is wide open. I gather myself together & fail as always to make a complete sentence to answer her. But, I think back to the wise words of my sister, & dive right in, not giving two shits if I sound creepy.

“I just - It’s - amazing. It’s beautiful.” I manage. I look into her eyes again to find them already on me. My heart flutters in my chest as I see her cheeks turn a slight pink color.

Was talking to people really this easy?
