Present
I strode across the concrete pavement, watching the cracked sidewalk, making sure not to step in any of the food littered across the ground. I watched a group of pigeons crowd together around a half-eaten hot dog as the street lamp next to it flickered and then proceeded to go out.
A young woman walked across the street, blending in with the darkness, her jet black dress and coat matching the midnight sky.
"Watch out! Car!" I cried to the women as she obliviously crossed the street, a car appearing out of nowhere. The gray Toyota's headlights were dim, providing no warning to the young women crossing the street. Seconds later the dull headlights illuminated her face and I noticed her blank, expressionless appearance, still trying to work out the inevitable. Not a single emotion appeared to be visible, nor a single ounce of recognition. No scream emitted from her body. No desperate cry for help. No sudden attempts to flee. It was all too late anyways. There was nothing I could do to stop the inescapable reality. Bang. The speeding car struck her and her body flew over the vehicle, glass flying everywhere, originating from the broken windshield that now had a large crack spread across the glass. Her body lay limp on the black pavement.
The car slowed down for a few short seconds before driving off but before they could get away I saw the driver's face - small as it was in the reflection of the side view mirror - and I recognized it. I knew who it was.
