"Your car or my car?" Gregg asks as we walk down the stairs. "My car." I smile at him and he responds just the same.
The car ride was quiet--from my side at least; Gregg's mom had called him and they chatted the whole way. He'd be constanly rolling his eyes and shaking his head in annoyance at his mom's constant worry about his whereabouts. Gregg was 24 and Mrs. Cameron still didn't get the grip that her son was a well-maintained grown up. All I could do was giggle.
"Finally," Gregg says looking at his phone just as I am parking. I let out a laugh and he sighs. "My mother just doesn't know when to stop."
"Imagine when you get married." His eyes go wide as he shakes his head. "That'll be the day."
"What you don't want to get married?" I turn off the car and look at him. "If I find the right girl...then maybe." He smiles at me and for some unknown reason, I begin blushing.
"Well let's get to this." I have to break that minimal uncomfort. Gregg lets out a light laugh and I assume it's because he knows I blushed.
Here I am, once again, at Coastline Rehabilitation Center. Once approaching the reception area, I am greeted by lots of smiling people. Everytime I come in here I wonder if it hurts them to smile so much. Never did I see someone lacking a grin. Maybe they all are just trying to keep the vibe positive, since this place is plainly made for the better. But I like it, though. Whether they are having a bad day and they have to plaster a smile, or not...it is appreciated.
We sign our names down on a sheet of paper and we both get handed our visitors pass. We walk through the glass doors with the phrase "Positivity is the key of life" printed on them.
I watch Gregg from the corner of my eye and he is scanning everything. It just clicks that this is his first time here. "We won't be here long." Gregg replies with a smile and he puts his arm around me. A blush slowly creeps on my face as we continue down the hall.
Once approaching the room, we notice the door wide open. My mom is sitting on a chair, watching a 'how to' video on knitting. She turns around without us having to say a word and a huge smile breaks out.
"Cassie!" She puts aside her utensils and places her arms around me; it feels really good to feel my mom's embrace. Her hug feels like if she hasn't seen me for years. The last time I saw her was about 2 weeks ago. I look around the pastel colored room and realize how small it actually is.
"Gregg!" She says, releasing me from the embrace and giving a quick hug to Gregg. "How are you, Ms. Harper?"
"I'm great. I'm so happy to see you. Come in, come in." She moves aside and closes the door. "Have a seat." She points at the chair and her bed. "I'm fine standing, thank you, but you should take one." My mom sits on the chair and I sit across from her, on the bed.
"It feels like it has been forever that I've seen you. Were you two coming from somewhere?"
Gregg shakes his head, and I say, "No, just from the apartment."
"Yeah, Cici wasn't at the apartment, so I decided to hang out with your daughter," Gregg adds.
"How's your family doing? Cici?" My mom's hands interwine and are set as support for her head, as she places her elbows on her legs, giving Gregg her utmost attention. "They're there...doing good." Gregg shrugs, seeming to not really know what to say. Almost as if he didn't want to exactly get into the topic of his parents.
"But mom, how are you?" I decide to steer the attention away from Gregg and he seems relieved that I do.
"Oh I'm good. That doesn't matter. How are you? how's the music thing going? tell me everything!" I chuckle at how she uses 'music thing.' She doesn't know about the tour and what is about to come. That is one of the reasons why I came: to tell her about my soon departure.
