Prologue

My eyes opened to a bright, beautiful meadow. It was huge, surrounded by large evergreen trees. I looked around in wonder. The sky was a happy blue color and the sun was shining bright. My wings, which sprout from in between my shoulder blades, flapped gently in the breeze. Wild flowers sprouted everywhere and the long grass brushed gently against my legs.

I began to walk towards the center of the meadow. Something was telling to go there, that it would be safe there. Safe from what I did not know, but I moved closer to the center anyways.

As I drew near the center of the meadow, the ground began to move from undernearth my feet. At first it was a gentle rocking, but now it was like someone was jerking the ground violently. I was thrown from my feet and as I hit the earth, my head banged against a hidden rock and I blacked out.

I came back a short while later, and I slowly got up on wobbly legs, using my wings to steady myself. My vision was a bit blurred but I started to notice something in the meadow's center. Once I could see clearly, I realized a great, huge maple tree had appeared from the ground.

I was shocked, mesmerized. I didnt notice until I was half way there that my legs had suddenly started sprinted towards it. I was filled with the need to be by the tree. It made me sad to think of being so far away from it, so I ran as fast as I could. I was confused on why I felt this way, but I just did and I didn't fight it.

In moments, I was at the tree's truck. It was huge. Its branches looked like they could touch the highest stars. It seemed to glow with health, despite having its leaves being beautiful shades of red, orange, and yellow. I was once again filled with a strange need. This time it was to climb the tree; to be in its branches; to touch its leaves. I was reaching up to grab the maple's lowest branch when I got a strange feeling, like someone was watching me.

Slowly, I lowered my hand and turned my head. I jumped back and barely stopped a screech from escaping my lips. Two pairs of eyes were glaring at me from behind two evergreens on the edge of the meadow. One pair of eyes was bright blue and the other was black as night with red pupils. My blood ran cold. All the happiness I had felt when I was near the maple was gone. I wasn't in the meadow anymore. The sky turned dark and the grass beneath me disappeared and was replaced by darkness. Looking around in horror and fear, I only saw three things; darkness, two evergreen trees, and the two pairs of eyes.

Suddenly I heard a small voice in my head. It was calling to me. I didn't understand what it was saying but I felt it physically pulling me to the blue eyes. I didn't know what was going on so I fought back. My wings were flapping like crazy to get free. My body was twisting all around trying to break out of this things grip. I had almost broken free when another voice entered my head. This one was telling me to go to the black eyes.

Suddenly the two pairs of eyes were on opposite sides of me. The blue was on my right and the black was on my left. They were both pulling me towards them. The voices were almost screaming in my ears, telling me to go to them. I began to panic. I didn't know what was happening. I was fighting the forces pulling me to the eyes. I was being lifted in the air, my arms and legs pulled apart. My wings were going crazy trying to get me away from the eyes, the voices, and the pain that had begun to fill me. It started in my legs, then to my arms, and then all over. It was like the eyes would rather tear me in half then let the other side win.

I was screaming now, begging them to stop. The pain was unbearable. But they didn't listen. The voices just got louder and the pain grew greater. I realized that they were trying to kill me. They wanted me to die. I was still screaming, even though I knew it wouldn't do anything. My wings eventually slapped down in defeat. Just before I was going to be ripped in two, the world went black.
