It was my fifteenth birthday on a fresh summer evening. I was sitting at a table with a couple of cousins awaiting for my best friend Charlie to arrive.
It soon was six and Charlie told me he was going to get here early. Why would he be here early? He's never on time for anything.
I hear my phone make a noise so I pick it up to see a text.
CHARLIE 🌹:
Hey Lilly I'm so sorry I'm going to be late there's a lot of traffic.
ME:
How much longer am I going to wait?
CHARLIE 🌹:
Not long I'll be there soon, oh and I'm bringing an old friend
ME:
Okay, who?
Then he never answered back.
Everyone was having fun, but I wasn't because I wasn't talking to anyone.
I have one friend and that's Charlie.
My mom walks up to me.
"Lilly how are you liking your masquerade ball party?" my mom asked.
My birthday's theme is as if you were going to a ball with a mask.
"Okay," I lied.
"What's wrong Lilly," my mom asked taking a seat next to me.
"Charlie isn't here yet," I explain.
"Oh sweetie he'll come don't worry," my mom said with sorrow in her eyes.
"I know. It's just that I thought Charlie would be on time for my special day that means the world to me."
"I know Lilly, but I'm sure he has a good excuse."
"He's late because of traffic mom," I paused, "He lives next door."
My mom started giggling a little.
"Mom this isn't funny," I said almost laughing with her.
"I'm sorry Lilly. I'm sure Charlie will be here any minute now," she said as she kissed my forehead and left.
I waited for about five minutes alone when Charlie comes running up to me.
"Lilly I'm so sorry I made you wait," Charlie said a little out of breath.
"Charlie you made me wake for three hours," I replied.
"I know, things happened."
"Like?"
"I told you one of them. I went to go get my old friend," he said sitting down next to me.
"Where is he then?"
Charlie looks around the party.
"Shoot," he said.
I giggled.
"Go find him," I said and walked away.
Charlie got up and walked in the opposite direction to look for his friend.
I walked to get something to drink.
Some very well dressed guy turns to me just as I get to the drink table.
"May I serve you something to drink?" he asked bowing.
"Yes please," I replied and pleaded.
