Fourteen Years Later

I woke up at the crack of dawn, like usual, and started to brush my hair. I studied my face and to be honest, I didn't really recognize the thirty year-old staring back at me. It feels like just yesterday that I was sixteen and the Pevensies were just crowned.

After cleaning up and having my tea, I slid Fortis into my weapons belt and walked down the corridor. I heard voices coming from the hallway I was turning on and immediately recognized them. The voices belonged to Edmund and Lucy.

Panicking, I saw a tall potted plant and ducked behind it. As I was thanking Aslan, the two royals walked by not even noticing me. The whole hiding plan has been going well for the past two weeks. I haven't seen the Pevensies once.

When I came out, I walked backwards, making sure that they were gone. I bumped into someone and my hand immediately went to my sword. I blinked and saw an urgent looking Mr. Tumnus staring at me. I smiled and said, "Tumnus! How are you?"

He nodded passively and said, "I need you to deliver an urgent message to the High King. Apparently there's been some trouble along the Northern Border with the Giants. They've been terrorizing Narnian villages and such." My eyes widened.

"Where is he?" I asked, feeling panicky. Tumnus shrugged and walked away. I scowled and bolted down the hallway to his room. You've got start somewhere. I knocked loudly, wringing my hands. Thankfully Peter opened up and beamed.

"General! To what do I owe the pleasure? Come in!" I gave him a weak smile and paced in the small living room. "Can I offer you anything?" I looked up at him and shook my head. Peter sat down on the opposite couch and laid back.

I continued to pace, trying to come up with a plan. Peter chuckled. "How are you really, Laurel? I haven't seen you in two weeks. Where have you been?" I flinched when he said my name. It's been a long time since someone used it. My name on his tongue was so beautiful and melodic. Stop it! He frowned and nodded. "Sorry. So what are you doing here?"

I jerked around and faced him, my eyes wide. "Tumnus told me to deliver you a message. Apparently there's been some trouble along the Northern Border with the Giants. Said they were terrorizing Narnian villages." Peter's face paled.

"By the Mane, that's not at all good." I nodded and watched as he ran a hand through his hair. "What're your orders, Sire?" He scowled at the title, but said, "We'll bring troops and handle the situation with military force."

I nodded and started for the door. "It's really good to see you, you know." I ran my fingers over the doorknob as I turned around and studied his face. Although there was a smile on his face, it didn't reach his eyes. I gave him the smallest of smiles and nodded. "I'll be back."

As I walked to the armory, I couldn't help but think about Peter. Even after distancing myself for fourteen years I still can't help but have feelings for him. And he still doesn't know about my wizardry. "By the Mane." I grumbled, surveying the room for Oreius. When I found him, I called out to him.

"General! To what do I owe the pleasure?" Geez why was everyone phrasing 'what's up?' like that today? "Captain, I need the High King's army to assemble now and prepare for battle." The Centaur's eyes widened. "What is happening?"
