Sweeping his foot under Ashton's, Rask tripped him, causing him to fall onto the matt on the gym floor. Ashton sighed, as he was helped up by his mentor.
"Hmm...we are going to have to fix that, aren't we," muttered Rask under his breath. "You ought to be training more. We won't be able to win the battle against the Infinite if you continue to act lazy."
Ashton gaped at his master. Lazy! He worked out every morning from 6 AM to 10 AM. He had brunch from 10:15 to 10:45 and then came hand to hand combat, weaponry and school hour. Then finally, after working your ass off you can finally relax, eat and get to bed by the strict curfew 9:30. Would you call that lazy?
Though, he wasn't complaining, he enjoyed staying active. He was thirteen, after all.
Before Ashton was born the Infinite descended on Earth and generated the New Genesis War. When humans were defeated, they, captured, killed or enslaved the people of Earth who hadn't already fled to a new planet, which they called "New Genesis."
The Infinite was a mystery to the apprentices in the hidden Chamber that was actually hidden underground. People tried not to speak of them, not counting history class, and even in the textbooks there wasn't much written about their conquerors.
The Chamber was an underground facility. It was dug out in 2078, around the time of the war. It was more than 100 miles long, and had more than 10,000 children, and more than 12,000 staff. The Chamber was dark and cold, and at night, had an eerie way about it. Luckily, nobody was out after curfew and the humongous walls were locked and secured so that no one, not even the Infinite could break through.
Rask looked at his wrist watch, which read 10:05. "Go shower up," he ordered. Every apprentice in the Chamber had a mentor. Ashton's mentor was Rask, the only man who survived the war without being captured or killed.
The apprentice's room were like barracks, lined in alphabetical order. Ashton shared a room with Allen, Aryn, Adam, Alex and Aiden.
Girls slept and trained on the other side of the Chamber, and the two genders seldom crossed paths.
Instead of battle training, girls were taught public speaking. Not because their ruler, Master Cheng, was discriminatory against girls being trained for the war, but when the people of Earth finally overthrew the Infinite, the people of the world would need someone to turn to. Girls were stereotypically more patient and calm, making them perfect to one day hold high government positions.
The apprentices did all this within the hidden walls of the Chamber. Most of them had been recruited from children's homes and juvenile centers to be a part of Master Cheng's development. Ashton had been left in the hands of Rask before he'd opened his eyes. That meant he had never seen the sky, the sun, or the stars.
He was bullied for his little knowledge of the outside world, but Rask told him to shake it off. "Never let them see that they get to you," he always said. It had stayed with Ashton for all these years.
Heading for his room he ignored the greetings from his "friends."
As Rask always said, "Friends are a waste of time," and Ashton made sure to not get too friendly with anyone. No one in the Chamber was to be trusted, except for Rask, Master Cheng, and Cheng's grandson, Damian, who had grown up in the Nursery with Ashton.

After his shower, he headed into the Cafeteria for brunch. Jo the "lunch lady" as the others called her, was passing out the trays of food, which were ordered especially for each apprentice.
Mentors gave their apprentices specific menus of what they could eat. Rask was a strict vegetarian, and believed that meat turned man savage. And after all Rask had seen, Ashton never had the courage to ask about it.
"Could I have a small salad with cheese, tomatoes, croutons and slivered radish?" Ashton asked, politely. "Oh, and a dash of Italian sauce."
"Ashton, I apologize, but the fresh stack of lettuce from New Genesis hasn't come in yet," answered Jo apologetically.
"Really!" Ashton raised an eyebrow. He paused for a few seconds, and then replied with, "Have you informed Master Cheng?" New Genesis was always efficient on supplying the Chamber with fresh fruits and vegetables.
"Yes, of course," Jo said, quickly. Maybe a little too quickly, thought Ashton suspiciously.
"Alright, then...what is available for vegetarians?" asked Ashton, a million questions buzzing through his head. Like, Why hasn't Cheng informed us?  Why hasn't he at least informed Rask? and Why is it so important that nobody knows?
"Oatmeal is the only breakfast. The yogurt's out of date, and the cereal is stale," she sighed.
Ashton sighed, and took a bowl, eyeing her suspiciously before sitting down next to Damian. Damian was not only the grandson of Master Cheng, but he was as fierce as a well-seasoned warrior.
"Hey D-"
A crash came from the center of the cafeteria, and a cry of pain came. Frank and Kyle, two of the fifteen year olds, were beating up a small kid.
Wesley, Ashton remembered, he was the new kid. Wes had a ginger head of hair and wore dark glasses which made him look somewhat geeky, and not popular with the taller, more jock-like apprentices.
Ashton couldn't take it any longer. Why wasn't anyone doing anything?
"Hey, you two!" growled Ashton. The two teenagers, standing more than a foot taller than him turned.
"Hey, Frankie," began Kyle, a smug grin planted on his face. "Did ya hear somethin'?" he asked.
"Yeah, but I don't see nothin...yous think it was a bug-" before Frank could say anything else, Ashton kicked his shins. Hard. Falling to the ground, Frank gritted his teeth, his nose flaring and face turning red. "Hey, that hurt!"
"Oh, so now you see me," scoffed Ashton, eyeing Rask, who was watching from the corner of the room. "You know, I think you've bullied me enough for the rest of us. So why don't you pick on someone your own size for once."
And in one moment, Rask was at Ashton side. His mentor grabbed Kyle by his collar and sent him flying onto the ground, and Rask then did the same to Frank.
"How does it feel to be the bullied for a change," he growled menacingly. He took out his "walkie talkie" and spoke into it, asking for Frank and Kyle's mentors. "You've still got another ten minutes. Go finish whatever you started."
Ashton nodded, and headed back over to where Damian was sitting.
"Dang," he murmured, glancing back at Wesley who was being helped up by his mentor. "I didn't know Rask would do something like that. As if he wasn't intimidating before." Damian shuddered. He looked down at his wrist watch. "Gotta go, sorry Ash. Grandfather won't be pleased if I'm late, again."
Ashton shrugged. "No biggie. Catch you later. I'll be the one in black." Damian chuckled. It was a joke because all the apprentices wore black. It was the color of their uniforms."
"Alright, and I'll be the one with wings sprouting from my back," said Damian, playing along, as he walked out of the Cafeteria.

That night Ashton couldn't get to sleep. He stayed up, listening to Aryn's relentless snoring from above. To bad the bunks aren't soundproof, thought Ashton. Then he heard a crash from outside. Huh? No one, not even Master Cheng himself were allowed out of their rooms after curfew.
Another banging came from the halls, Bang! Bang! Bang! Came the eerie noise, and suddenly the apprentices were all awake. Gasps came from the halls.
Adam almost fell off his bed, making some of the more immature boys snicker, but Ashton didn't laugh. He swung open the sliding door, to see something horrifying.
The walls had opened
