to meet

It was only Amanda's third day in New York yet she already felt like she belonged there. Trouble had always seemed to lure her into the city and she quite enjoyed it. Back at home, the calmness and, to be honest, boringness, left her empty and she had been sure that she could die of boredom any second. Hence, as soon as she planted one of her feet on the New Yorker soil, she felt more than motivated to finally reach for her dreams and goals.

However, after the first day, it had only been a few hours to be exact, she already felt like crying. Crying, but certainly not giving up because this was what she had always wanted; a challenge. In her hometown everything had come to her so easily. She knew her way around and had little tasks to fulfill. But here, a new challenge was waiting behind every of the many corners and was what was driving her will to keep going despite the new difficulties.

Thus, during her first day living in this gigantic city, she already learned a lot more than she had ever before. Never before was she confronted by rejection like this, so directly. She went to two job interviews; dressed in her best clothes, prepared for every question these tall, intimidating, rich people might have. 'We are very sorry to inform you that you are in fact not the type of person we are looking for.' She had heard that sentence twice today already, and she had three more interviews to come tomorrow. But she did not once think of giving up. She would try again and again; there were so many companies looking for employees, one of them eventually would take her.

Still, she could not comprehend why those business men were not at all interested in her. Her qualifications were very much presentable; you see she took every opportunity of a part time job or internship offer she could get so when it came to qualifications, she was very well off. Maybe it was her appearance or physique which left them uninterested. For a manager or assistant, you should have a strong appearance in order to get your protégé to the next level and she was in fact lacking in that department with her petit and soft physique.

Amanda was in her mid twenties but people often assumed that she was younger, maybe because of her height - she was a little shorter than average but wore tall heels to compensate for that - or maybe it was because of her slim and seemingly fragile body - she was healthy, but most of the time too lazy to work on gaining muscles. So indeed, who would hire someone like that as a personal assistant to manage every important meeting?

With a light heart but slightly damp cheeks she fell asleep that night, already looking forward to what the next day had in store for her.

During the break between the first job interview the next day – it went no better than the last ones – and her next one, she took a short trip to one of the many university scattered around the city. Maybe, only maybe, if after the twentieth interview she would still not have a job, she might try and study. It could open her mind for other directions her life could take on. Maybe she was destined to be a teacher? The thought made a smile crack open her lips. Never.

Nonetheless, with all her documents at hand, she stood in front of the stone building which, from afar, looked rather intimidating, however the closer she got, the more she started to admire the architecture and feeling it gave off. The many students laying in the grass in front of the building entering or exiting it, seemed to have vanished from her sight for a mere moment. That was until she noticed, from the corner of her eye, that something unfamiliar was lying on top of the documents she had held for most of the day.

'Continue your parents inherited empire successfully. A lecture held by Mr. Osborne' the minimalistic flyer read. The lecture was to start in a few minutes and even though she couldn't care less about its topic, she still found herself contemplating to go. It wouldn't be a waste of time since she could most likely get a good feeling of what it must be like to study at a university. Before she had completely wrapped her mind around the idea her feet were already dragging her towards the entrance and a few moments later she stood within the huge building, without knowing where to go next.

The flyer did say in which room the lecture was held at, but how should she know where it was located at? 'I'm sorry-' 'Excuse me-' Everyone seemed to be too busy to help her and since the lecture was about to start she took matters into her own hands and went straight into one of the many huge isles.

Finally, after some time of just wandering around without finding her destination, a professor was kind enough to help Amanda. She was practically running towards the door and luckily made it in just in time, though, earning a few confused glances from some students.

Taking a seat at the back near the door, she firstly took a deep breath to calm her beating heart and secondly took a long glance around the room. It looked just like she had imagined such a room in a university would look like; rows of seats pointing towards the place where professors – or in this case a businessman – would stand and talk. But there was one thing that she found strange; the room was pretty much full. The audience consisting mostly of females was slowly calming down and after finally taking a good look at the person standing in front of the huge crowd, she could understand why the demand was so great.

Down there stood a guy, not much taller than her, but with a presence so strong and fascinating, almost intimidating, she would have loved to take a leaf out of his book. As soon as he began talking however, she felt herself being dragged into his story by the endearing yet deep voice of his.

It seemed as if almost everyone in the room felt the same as her and only after he had finished his lecture, it seemed like everyone started breathing again.

Amanda didn't understand what it was about that young man that made his presence so intense but she couldn't complain. Even from afar, she could notice his beauty. He wasn't looking like the typical American model however, he was a different kind of beauty and what is probably what drew the interest of so many females in. On the other hand, his suit was practically screaming 'wealthy' so that might be another reason for his popularity. However, Amanda couldn't take her eyes off his sparkling light blue ones.

'Ladies, I need your attention one last time before I forget it.' He was very well aware of the lack of male presence and used it to his advantage. 'OSCORP is currently looking for new employees. I did a little scouting myself earlier and everyone who got a flyer, I'd like to ask to come forward now.' Amanda's eyes grew bigger. Didn't she get a flyer as well? Unfortunately, before she could react, a hand grabbed her sheet of paper and pulled it away and all Amanda could do was watch that girl as she quickly made her way down the aisle. Great. Amanda had had the chance of working at this big and successful business but because she was too lost in her own thoughts, she missed the opportunity. Even if she hadn't gotten the job, she would have still spent some time with Harry Osborn which would have been amazing on its own. She thought that she could have learned a lot from him.

Sulking, she remained in her seat for some time while Harry was talking to the girls, if it was really the flyer they were given by Harry himself was questionable, but he would not be able to remember every one of them anyways. Harry's smile was never faltering but Amanda noticed that his eyes soon grew tired. There were only a few women left down there, and because Amanda believed in the unbelievable she tried her luck, maybe he would really remember her if she told him that someone else took her invitation. Amanda was pondering on a good way to start the conversation until she felt the presence of a big man beside her.

'I'm sorry but if you're not in possession of a flyer you have to leave now.' The deep voice sounded and Amanda tried her best to explain the situation but the man was having none of it. Before she would make a scene, which she really wanted to avoid, she left the hall, head hanging low. There went her opportunity of a well off job.

A glance at her watch was telling her that she still had some time until she had to prepare herself for the next job interview. Then why not grab something to eat? She tried her best to remember the way back to the entrance hall and after a few dead ends she made it.

With a croissant in one hand and a brochure in the other, she sat down on a bench close to the university. Even though the lecture ended unfortunate, she found a liking in lectures and the university itself; if only all the professors would look like the man from today. Amanda found out that she had to decide soon since the closing day for applications was in three days. She could write an application and if she hadn't gotten a job until then, she could hand it in...
