ㄹ/을 뻔 하다 (Almost)
ㄹ/을 뻔 하다 is a grammatical structure that means ‘to almost do something’. This structure is often used with the word 거의 (almost) to give it more emphasis. The basic conjugation rules are:
1) Verb stem ending in a vowel → Use ㄹ 뻔 하다 (Almost)
2) Verb stem ending in ㄹ → Use 뻔 하다
3) Verb stem ending in a consonant → Use 을 뻔 하다 (Almost)It is very important to keep in mind that when you are talking about an action that had already started, and you are saying that the action ‘almost’ happened, you shouldn’t use - ㄹ/을 뻔 하다. Let’s take a look at an example:
(x)저는 음식을 거의 다 먹을 뻔 했어요.
jeoneun eumsig-eul geoui da meog-eul ppeon haess-eoyo.
I almost ate all the food. The intended meaning is ‘I almost ate all the food’. Why is this sentence incorrect? The action that ‘almost’ happened was ‘eating (all the food)’. However, even though you didn’t eat all of the food, you were in the state of eating prior to ‘not being able to eat all of the food’. Therefore, you should not use - ㄹ/을 뻔하다 in this case. Here, you can just say:
저는 음식을 거의 다 먹었어요.
Example sentences:
저는 차를 거의 칠 뻔 했어요
jeoneun chaleul geoui chil ppeon haess-eoyo
I almost hit that car (before the fact that you almost hit the car, you were not doing the action of ‘hitting the car’, so - ㄹ/을 뻔 하다 can be used)화가 너무 나서 친구를 거의 때릴 뻔 했어요.
hwaga neomu naseo chinguleul geoui ttaelil ppeon haess-eoyo.
