Spring break
It was finally spring break and my family, along with a family we were close to decided to take two week trip to the Mayan Riviera in Mexico for 14 days of relaxation and fun. I had practically grown up with the Mendes'. Their parents were like a second set to me and their children were like siblings to my eleven year old brother and I. Well they were until middle school when I fell head over heels in love with their son Shawn, who was my age. He was no longer the teenage boy that sat in his room all night long singing songs and jotting down lyrics that appeared in his head. Now he was one of the most successful artists out there and I hadn't seen him in a while.
Aaliyah decided on our first day in Mexico that she wanted to learn how to surf. Shawn and I weren't so keen on the idea but we reluctantly agreed and now here we are, surf boards in our arms, facing the bright blue Caribbean Sea.
Our surfing instructors name was Perez. He was about 10 years old than me, at age 19. He brought us into the water and helped us one at a time. We definitely weren't the best, and Aaliyah couldn't stay on the board for more than five seconds before a wave would come along and wipe her off, but what was really important, we all had fun. I watched shawn catch a wave and stay standing for a few seconds before he falls off and we all laugh. "Ready Olivia?" Perez said in his Spanish accent. To be honest, he kind of annoyed me. He's been sending me weird looks and has been pretty touchy for a surfing instructor since we started an hour ago. I paddle away from him slightly. "I think I'll try by myself" I tell him and paddle out a bit towards an incoming wave. I catch it and stand up, using my arms to balance myself and manage to stay on my board for close to 20 seconds. All of my friends clap except for Shawn, who sit on his board looking unhappy. He usually wasn't the jealous type but maybe surfing is different. I mean, it's not my fault that I'm amazing at everything I try. We end our surfing lesson on that note and head towards shore. "Let me get that for you mi amor" Perez says with a smirk and reaches out to take my board from me. Gross. "I've got it" I tell him and continue walking. I was 19 years old and extremely capable of carrying my own bored. "No, no , no! A pretty lady like you should never have to carry anything" He exclaims and reaches for it again. "No!" I snap and walk quickly in the other direction. I set my board down at the top of the beach and join the others. When I look at Shawn, he is once again glaring at me. Jesus, what's his problem today? I strip off my wet suit, leaving me in my white bikini, and hang it up the hook. We all walk over to the little cafe located on our resort where our parents are having coffee. "How was that?" My dad asks with a smile as we all take a seat at the long table they were sitting at. "It was epic!" My brother Trevor exclaims with a toothy grin. "I'm glad, you looked great out there" My dad says. "The instructor had a thing for Olivia" Aaliyah teases. I roll my eyes with a small smile and take a bit of a doughnut on my dads plate. The others laugh and continue teasing me throughout the entire day.
After dinner, we decide to make a fire on the beach. Everyone pitches together and collects dry driftwood to use. "What did you think of the surfing lesson?" I ask Shawn and he shrugs his shoulder, not looking up at me. I put my hand on his shoulder and he flinches. "Are you okay?" I ask, a little concerned. Shawn was usually fairly quiet but around me he was outgoing and talkative. He shrugs again and adds another stick to his pile. "I'm fine" He replies, barley loud enough for me to hear. I decide not to bother him anymore and give me a small hug which he pulls away from. I sigh and pick up my sticks, heading back to where our fire will be. "Is he okay?" Aaliyah whispers, motioning to Shawn. I shake my head. "I'm not sure, he's only said three words to me all day" I reply and take a marshmallow from the bag Trevor is holding. We finally get the fire started and set up some logs to sit. I notice Shawn sitting with a blanket wrapped around him, on his phone. I go over and sit next him and he doesn't even look up. By now I'm getting mad but I don't let it show. We're in this beautiful country on vacation and I'm not going to let Shawn being jealous that I'm a better surfer then him ruin this. We break into the marshmallows, chocolate and graham crackers and have a nice feast. "Get yourself a man that looks at you the way Olivia looks at food" Aaliyah laughs. "No get yourself a man that looks at you the way Perez looks at Olivia" Trevor cries and narrowly avoids the handful of sand I threw at him. I swear, they may be eleven and fourteen but sometimes they act like they're 5. "Livy and Perez sitting in a tree K-I-S-S-I-N-G" Trevor sings at the top of his lungs. and I wanted to kill him. "I hate you guys!" I exclaim but can't help but laugh at how annoying they are. Suddenly Shawn stands up and starts walking up to the path that leads from the beach back to our rooms. "Where are you going Shawn?!" Aaliyah calls out. "I'm going to sleep" Shawn replies without turning around. I roll my eyes and stand up. "That it!" I mutter under my breath and jog after him. "What the hell is wrong with you?!" I exclaim and then realize that it's 12:30 in the morning and people are trying to sleep. "Nothing is wrong with me" He says and keeps walking. I shake my head with frustration and grab his arm, holding him in place."Tell me" I practically growl. "It's stupid" Shawn says and runs his free hand through his hair. "Are you mad because I'm a better surfer than you?" I ask him and he chuckles a little. "Who told you that?" He asks, his mouth set in a straight line. "I just figured that's what it was because you were fine until we started surfing" I explain and
Shawn looks at the ground. "I didn't like what he was doing to you" Shawn admits, looking up, his cheeks red as a tomato. I raise my eyebrows, wondering if he means what I think he means. That stupid Perez. "I like you Ollie, I really really like you and I have for a long time" He says quietly and I can't help but smile. "Do you know how hard is is to watch somebody touching the person you love in front of you?" He asks, his face looks even more red. "You like me?" I ask him and move closer to him, letting go of his arm. He nods and blushes even more if possible. I wrap my arms around his waist and hug him the tightest I've ever hugged anyone. Then we pull away, my arms still around his neck and his still around my waist, our faces centimeters apart. "Can I kiss you?" Shawn asks, his voice is the only thing I can hear over the waves crashing into shore. I nod and he leans forward, capturing my lips with his. I kiss back, enjoying the feeling of his lips on mine. One hand cupping the side of his face and the other tangled in his soft brown hair, I stumble into him as our tongues battle for dominance. When air becomes an issue we pull away. Resting my forehead against his, we breath heavily. "Olivia?" Shawn asks once we've caught our breath. I look over at him and nod. "Do you feel the same way about me?" He asks, his face transforming from one of a 19 year old boy to a scared 7 year old. I smile softly and kiss his lips so gently that if his eyes had been closed when I leaned in, he wouldn't know I kissed him. "Yes Shawn , I do"'I reply, leaning my head against his chest, his arms wrapping protectively around me. I didn't know how this would workout or how this would affect us but I knew that Shawn and I had something.3 votes for another one :)
