Chapter 1
I could feel myself dazing off as the teacher went on, and on about cyber safety and why it's important. I twirled my pencil around my index finger, waiting for miss July's speech to be over. I look over at Giselle my best friend, she's sitting with one leg wrapped over the other, her eyes wandering around the room. She met my gaze and the corners of her lips twitched up into a slight smile, I nod my head toward the teacher and rolled my eyes, Giselle mouthed out the words "I know". "Giselle," My head snapped around to face miss July, her hazel eyes glaring at Giselle, "Do you know the answer," miss July said in a deep voice. "Sorry miss July," miss July drew in a big breath and sighed "that's what I thought," she was looking at the ground with one hand pinching her temples.
"I'm so sorry I got you into trouble back there, can you forgive me," I pleaded to Giselle, while I chucked my back on my back, "I can" she replied a smile creeping up her face. I moan I hate when she does this " will you forgive me" I begged, we started walking to science class "of corse I will Maple, you're my best friend." A massive smile grew on my face as I placed an arm around Giselle's shoulders, and kept walking to class.
I rose from my seat as the bell rang, the piercing sound bouncing around in my ears.
After the teacher dismissed us I grab my bag and swing it onto my shoulders, the wait pushing me down and making me feel heavy. As I arive at my house the sweet smell of lavender gushes in my face like a wave collapsing over me, "Hi mum" I call she must be cooking lavender pie my favourite. I walk into the the kitchen and see mum cooking, she looks over at me with a slight streak of meat on her cheek. "Hey darling, how was school," she said in a soft voice "good" I mutter under my breath while walking up the stairs, the soft carpet tickling my feet. I flopped onto my bed my head hitting the pillow with a soft thud, I sigh and shut my eyes. I hear a knock on the door " Hi Maple, you know camp renewal is on next week," I moan and let my eyes slither open, " please don't remind me."
Camp renewal is a place you go to when you're eighteen years of age, with all the other eighteen year olds, and you do a bunch of different tests then get cut up and put together in different ways depending on your results, well atlas that's how I see it. Mum slowly pushes the door open, then walks in with careful steps as if I could attack at any minute, she plops down onto my bed near my feat. "Honey don't be scared, I know that camp renewal sounds a bit creepy but it's to make our city a better place," yea right getting chopped up then pieced back together like a puzzle sound a lot like it's making our city a better place, " mum why can't I skip the camp, tell them I died and I can run to the forest!"
Mum let out a soft chuckle that quickly got replaced with a sigh, "that's exactly what I said before I left to go to camp, but this is what you have been living up to all your life." I groaned "but what if I don't want to live up to something, what if I just want to live in the moment," I burst out "honey" mum said in a soothing voice stroking my cheek, "no mum, just go just go" mum started walking out of the room her red hair swaying as she shut the door into place.
