"Victor honey, your father and I have a small business trip. Could you do us a favor and watch Beatrice this weekend?" She asked. "Why can't we get a pessant to do it?" I groaned. "Because I feel bad for them. The government never let's them better their lives. Can't you have a little compassion?" Me and my mom argued over this all the time. I don't care what they do with their lives as long as I'm fine. "Not really. But I'll baby sit her anyway." I said. "Honestly." She sighed. I scoffed before leaving the room.
Time skip to Saturday~
"Have a nice time momma and daddy!" My sister said. "Be good for your brother okay?" My mom said. Beatrice nodded. Once they left I got ready to go. "Let's go." I demanded my sister. She rubbed her sleepy eyes. She took a nap while I as getting dressed. "Where are we going?" She asked. "I'm going to hire a pessant." I answered. She didn't question me. "K." She said quietly. "Now go put on Mr. Bubbles." She nodded. That's what she named her bubble coat. It's not like I didn't love my sister, I did. It was just that Damon invited me to this big block party and it's supposed to be really cool. We walked out into the winter air. She held my hand as we walked down the street. "Bubba, I'm cold." She stated, snuggling into my thigh. "We'll be home soon." I said stroking her silver hair. I found a girl standing outside a shop. Her clothes were tattered and her hair was unkempt. Definitely a pessant. "Hey!" I called. She turned towards me. Her face said much different than her clothes. Her wardrobe said pessant, but her face said goddess. "I-I um..." I lost the words along with my confidence of being a rich kid. "Yes sir?" She questioned. Her long red hair made my eyes go wide, her freckles made me breathless. Still... I regained my composure. "I need to hire you for a job. Come with me." I stated. She was required by law. She had no choice. For some reason our government was very unfair. It randomly picked families to be pessants. If you were born to a pessant family you were one. And pessants only got certain jobs so they'd stay at the bottom of society. Why was this system set in place? I don't know ,but no one bothered to change it or ask to do so. Most of us didn't care what the unfortunate did with their lives. "Yes sir. Please lead the way." She spoke politely. I walked her to my house. "Stay here. You can set your bag on the table." I said.
???'s POV
He walked upstairs. What was he doing? His jet black fringe flopped as he ascended the stairs with his silver-haired sister. I tried to read the boy. Mama had always told me I was good at reading emotions. I knew where he was going. A guy named Travis was having a house party. He had one of the biggest houses on the block, if not the biggest. He invited a lot of kids so it was going to be packed. No one invited me. I had no rich friends. What I saw in the boy was selfishness. A conceded kid who only cared about himself and his reputation. He didn't even care enough to watch his little sister. "I just put her to bed. She's a sleepyhead." He chuckled to himself. "So she shouldn't wake up. If she she does, you can tell her I went to the store. You should wake her up around 9 to eat. There's dinner in the fridge labeled 'Beatrice' It's her's just heat it up. I'd expect her to be asleep by the time I come home." He said paying extra attention to detail. Maybe he cared more than I thought. He put on his coat, opened the door and looked back up the stairs. I guess he didn't want to leave her. He stepped outside. "Oh yeah, if anything happens, call me. Don't hesitate. There's a land line in the kitchen." He said finally leaving. I was wrong about that boy he cared.... a lot.
Victor's POVI got to the party walking in. The door was unlocked. "Yo Victor, you made it!" Damon said. "Yeah. It's pretty cool over here." I replied making my way to the punch bowl. After grabbing a cup I bumped into someone, spilling punch all over them. "I'm sorry!" I apologized looking up. It was Travis, the host of the party and captain of the football team. He didn't look happy and I have a third of his muscle mass. If he decided he was mad enough to beat me... I'd be dead. "Watch it, punk." I received a punch straight to jaw with luckily no more abuse. "Ouch." I grumbled balancing myself. The guy growled as he walked away. Damon ran over to me. "Are you okay?" I nodded. "I'm feeling dizzy though. I might leave a little early." I was almost certain that I had a mini concussion... okay so I'm exaggerating but I was dizzy and I was worried about Beatrice, I hadn't left her by herself until now so I was scared. I tried to say at the party for a few more minutes but I had a headache and and my brotherly instincts were kicking in so I decided to leave. Truth be told I was kinda sad to go. This was my one chance of becoming popular ,but I've made up my mind. "I can't stay, sorry man, I'll see you later." He nodded and let me go. I walked down the cold streets, the snow dusting lightly on my head as I froze. Once I reached my house I took out my key to open the door. "Hello sir." The girl greets. I forgot I had a pretty girl at my house, now I'm nervous. "H-hey. Is she asleep?" I questioned. The girl nodded. I closed the door behind me. I walked upstairs and and checked on my sister. Sure enough, she was sound asleep. I kissed her on her cheek and left her room. "Thank you for watching her." She nodded. I handed her a hundred dollars. "But Sir, we agreed on 50." She pointed out. "I know ,but you did a really good job. She usually doesn't like strangers but she's fed and asleep. Which is an accomplishment if you're a babysitter. Like I said she doesn't like to eat or sleep if family's not home. So, concider this an extra thank you." I stated. She nonodded. "Thank you sir, have a good night." I opened the door for her but quickly realized she didn't have a coat. It's below zero out there! "H-hey, wait!" She turned around. "Yes sir?" She questioned. "I just- it's freezing out. You need a coat." I said. "It's alright. My house isn't far." She mumbled shyly. "I can't let you go. It's too cold. I think I have a coat for you. Just come back inside for a second." She nodded hesitantly before coming in. I quickly fixed some hot chocolate. It was clear that just from standing outside that long she was an icicle. "Drink this. I'll be back." I went in my mom's closet to find a big winter coat she wore in her teens. It wasn't that fancy so I pulled it out and handed it to the girl. "Here. That should keep you warm." I smiled. "Thank you, you're very kind, sir." I shook my head. "Not at all. It's just the right thing to do." She smiled at me. "Bubba?" I heard a tiny little voice come from the stairs. "What are you doing? You need to go back to sleep." She pouted. "I missed you." She said quietly. "Okay, come here." She shuffled her feet over to me. She was in a little purple onesie that was keeping her warm. I picked her up and lied her across my lap. She grabbed onto my sweater. "How cute." The girl across the table mumbled. I looked at her. "I know, she's adorable." Beatrice was asleep in a few minutes. The girl was across the table quietly finishing her hot chocolate. "What's your name by the way?" I asked, shifting the small child so she lied on top of my shoulder. She looked suprised that I asked ,but she quickly answered. "Joana. Can I have yours?" She asked. "Victor. It's nice to meet you. If I ever go somewhere else I'll be sure to get you to watch her. I think she likes you." I smiled. "I'm glad. Such a sweet little girl." She grinned at the silver-haired three year-old in my arms. "I should get going now. Thank you for everything." She said putting her mug in the sink. "S-sure yeah." I stuttered. She put the coat on and walked out the door, waving before she left. I walked up the stairs to put Beatrice back in bed. I've never seen anyone prettier. What a night man...
