Too Young

Chapter 3

Matt:
When I came downstairs I already knew that Carolynn was in rare form. I did my best to stay away from her. My younger brother, Brandon was sitting at the kitchen table eating breakfast. She grabbed me by the arm when I went to get a bowl of cereal. "You are not having breakfast. I'm not coming to get you at school if something happens."
I was afraid to ask, but I needed to know. "Can I at least take some carrots for lunch? I haven't eaten in a few days. I promise I won't get sick."
She was quiet for a long moment. "Fine.I guess, carrots. But that is it."
After vomiting for over a week and finally feeling human again, all I wanted was a good meal. But my dad was out of town, as usual. So I knew that wouldn't   happen anytime soon. And the only person who knew how I was treated by my stepmother was my best friend, Hannah Jamison. She and I had been friends since first grade. No one else has ever liked me. I'm the book worm. So was Hannah.
Hannah had been trying to get me to tell my father all of the things that Carolynn did to me. She threatened to, until I threatened to spill her secrets. Maybe that was part of the reason we gravitated to each other so much. We both had family secrets that no one else could know about.
I said goodbye to Brandon, then left the house. I decided to leave early so I could walk to school. I loved being outside. I knew that Hannah would most likely be walking to school, too, and I wanted to go with her. When I got to her house she was just walking out the door. She ran up to me and pulled me into a gentle embrace. "Are you okay?"
I told her I was alright and we walked to school. I didn't know if she really believed me or not because I hadn't been at school in over a week. We chatted all the way to school.
Hannah stopped me from going into school. "Wait. I have something for you. I'm sure Carolynn didn't let you have breakfast, right?"
"Yes. But we need to get in there.."
"Not until you eat this cereal bar."
The thing was that I always seemed to do whatever Hannah told me to. I knew that she always worried about me. "Fine. Thanks."
After eating my cereal bar, we went in. Hannah spotted a new girl but she was talking to the bitches of the school. "Wow. The poor girl didn't even have a chance."
I couldn't help but laugh. "Hey, the girl has a choice. We'll just have to see what kind of girl she is."
