Chapter 8

Amy:
When Ben and I got home Mom was waiting for us, like she always had. I knew she hoped to hear that our day went better than than the day before, which I guess it did go better. I knew Ben had a good day because he told me that he had a date that Friday night. The guy who said that he wasn't going to make friends at that that school had a date on our second day there.
     "Hey, guys. How was school?"
Ben went first. "It was fine. I'm going out Friday night."
     Mom sat down. "With who?"
"This girl I have a couple classes with. Her name is Jennifer Martin. Is that alright?"
"I guess that's alright. I just want you to be careful."
"Ben sighed. "I'll be fine. Really. She's really nice."
"Okay. How was your day, Amy?"
"It was fine. I talked to a few kids. I hope I made a few friends. I don't know though. Their names are Matt Anderson and Hannah Jamison. They both seem really nice."
"That's good. I'm glad both of you had a better day."
The rest of the night was uneventful. But I started thinking about Allie, and what Hannah told me about Matt. I didn't know why, but I really wanted to know why Matt was so protective of Allie. I thought that it was really sweet that he and Hannah thought so much of her. No one else probably ever had before. Allie seemed so sweet. I noticed that she was very trusting. But a lot of people like her are extremely trusting. I thought that was maybe why Matt was protective of her.
The next morning, I looked out for Amber and Ashley when I saw Allie. They weren't going to pull her into their web. I went up to Allie and said hi to her. "Hi, Allie."
Allie seemed so happy that I was talking to her. "Hi. Are you gonna eat lunch with us again today?"
I thought it was very sweet of her to ask. Hannah told me to eat with them so I was going to. "Is that alright with you?"
Allie smiled at me. "Yeah. I'd like that."
"Well, I have to get to class, Allie. I'll see you later, okay?"
      "Okay."
My morning classes seemed to drag on forever. I couldn't wait for lunch. I saw Hannah, but Matt wasn't there. "Hey, Hannah. Aren't we missing someone?"
"Hey. He didn't come to school."
     "Hopefully he'll be back tomorrow."
Hannah shook her head. "I'm not so sure about that, Amy."
I didn't know if I should ask, but my curiosity got the best of me. "Why?"
     "It's nothing. He's just sick a lot."
I didn't think I would get anywhere with my next question, but surprisingly, Hannah answered it with no hesitation whatsoever. "Why is Matt so protective of Allie?"
"She was abused as a baby. Shaken Baby Syndrome. He's just really close with her."
I still thought there was a lot more to it, but I didn't know what it could be. After all, maybe it was just that he was really sweet. "Wow. That's awful. Who does Allie live with?"
"Her mom. Her dad abused her, I guess. Her mom told me and Matt a while back. Ever since then, he has been extremely protective of her. You'd think that they were siblings or something."
We had to quit talking about it because Allie came to the table and sat down. I asked her why it took her so long to get there. "What took you so long to get your lunch?"
She had a huge grin on her face. "I've been invited to a party at Amber's on Friday night. I hope my mom says I can go. I told them that I would make cupcakes for their party."
Hannah and I spoke at the same time. "No."
     Allie looked confused. "No, what?"
I spoke first. "You shouldn't go."
Before Allie could say anything to object, Hannah then spoke. "No, Allie. You can't go. You and I will do something fun Friday night. Maybe Amy can spend it with us, too. Right, Amy?"
What else was I supposed to say? "Sure."
The rest of my day went by fairly quickly. When Ben and I got home, I immediately went upstairs to do my homework. I was thinking about what Hannah had told me about Allie. I felt so bad for her. I knew that she had no idea of what had happened to her. She would always need someone to take care of her in some way.
